The 3rd-seeded Cortland Lady Tigers defeated 14th-seed Cazenovia with a score of 68-31 in the Section III Class B playoff tournament’s round of 16.

“We really wanted this win,” said Cortland junior Kendall Mack. “We think we’re going to go pretty far. We just came out thinking that we were going to win it today, and we did.”

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (24 points), Kendall Mack (13 points), and Mallory Turner (7 points).

Cazenovia was led by Bess Johnson (11 points) and Ella Baker (10 points).

“Today we kind of treated it as a preparation for our stretch down the road when we play some tougher teams,” said Cortland Head Coach Janice Meyer. “We have some new game plans, and we wanted to test them out.”

“Our bench was super involved, defense was on point, we shot the ball really well, and I thought that this was a good game for us,” added coach Meyer

When asked about what to expect for their upcoming quarterfinal game, Cortland junior Valerosa Gambitta said, “We have to go in and expect a really tough game. We also need to work on our defense. We have new plays that we are working on that we just need to run through. Our defense is what wins games.”

According to Section III’s website, Cortland’s upcoming sectional quarterfinal game will be played at Cortland High School this Wednesday (February 22nd) against 6th-seeded Utica-Notre Dame. A specific starting time for the game is yet to be announced.
