Cortland girls basketball moves on to the sectional final

The second-seeded Cortland girls basketball team knocked off seventh-seeded Marcellus, 41-35, in the Class B semifinal round on Sunday at Onondaga Community College.

With the win, the Purple Tigers move on to the Class B final at 3 p.m. Saturday at OCC. It is the team’s first trip to the sectional championship game in over a decade.

The Tigers led 18-16 at the break in Sunday’s contest, and maintained a balanced effort in the second half.

Kendall Mack finished with 13 points for Cortland. Mallory Turner had 12 points, while Valerosa Gambitta chipped in 10.

The Tigers, ranked 21st in the state in Class B, will face fourth-seeded Westhill in Saturday’s Class B title game. The Warriors stunned top-seeded General Brown (ranked sixth in the state in Class B) with a 50-46 win in Sunday’s other semifinal matchup.
