City building fire on Main Street reaches the roof (Photos and interview inside)

A building fire on Main Street in Cortland went from the second floor to the top of the building on Monday evening, according to city fire chief Wayne Friedman.

Units from the city fire department quickly responded to Garcia's Mexican Grocery building shortly after 6:15 p.m. The fire was under control around 7:15 p.m.

“We believe the fire is entirely out,” Friedman said shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday.

Friedman told The Cortland Voice that the building was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Two individuals who lived in the building are currently under the care of the American Red Cross.

Buildings next to Garcia’s (Garcia’s restaurant and Frosted) were not affected by the fire. Friedman said the city’s fire investigators will work with state investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.

Further details surrounding the fire remain to be seen. This is a developing story, and The Cortland Voice will provide updates once they have been received.
