Cortland girls basketball faces Newark Valley in regionals matchup of state-ranked teams

The Cortland varsity girls basketball team will face a tough test in the Class B state regional final this weekend.

The Purple Tigers, ranked ninth in Class B in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association’s poll, goes up against top-ranked and undefeated Newark Valley of Section IV at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the SRC Arena.

Cortland jumped from No. 18 last week to No. 9 in this week’s state rankings. The Cardinals, the Class C state runner-up last season, moved to No. 1 this week from No. 2 last week.

The Tigers are coming off a 47-41 win over Westhill in the Section III Class B championship game this past Saturday. Newark Valley topped Chenango Forks by a score of 51-35 in the Section IV Class B final over the weekend.

The winner of Saturday’s Class B regional round contest will move on to the state semifinal round next Friday at Hudson Valley Community College.
