Mayor Scott Steve and the City of Cortland Common Council honored the Cortland varsity girls basketball squad and its successful 2022-23 campaign at its meeting on Tuesday.

The Purple Tigers received a proclamation and a key to the city plaque for a 2022-23 season that saw the team go 21-5, capture the Section III Class B title and reach the New York state final four.

“We have an outstanding basketball team,” Steve said. “They had a great season this year.”

The 2022-23 Cortland squad, which compiled the most wins in a single season in the program’s history, included Aubree Larkin, Mallory Turner, Lily Yang, Kartyr Hubbard, Kendall Mack, Katherine Harris, Valerosa Gambitta, Ryleigh Larkin, Claire Turner, and Gabby Brown.

“These girls gave their heart and soul,” Cortland coach Janice Meyer said. “There's a lot of expectation and demand for years to come now. They deserve every second of (the spotlight) and we’re honored to be here.”

Mayor Steve praised Meyer, and her assistant coach Rob Rivers, for doing “a tremendous job with this team.”

“We had tremendous community support,” Meyer said. “It was really great to be part of it.”
