The Cortland Planning Commission will discuss, review and potentially provide a recommendation on the city’s proposed law that would ease the process of redeveloping some properties in the area at its meeting in the coming days.

The city planning commission meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday on the third floor of city hall on Court Street in Cortland. A public hearing will also be attached to the city’s proposed law discussion.

The planning commission did not meet last month due to a lack of quorum, delaying movement of the proposed city property redevelopment law for approval by the city of Cortland Common Council.

The proposed city law will look to amend chapter 300 of the city code to “allow for building or property repurpose that serves a substantial public benefit.”

For property redevelopment applications, the Common Council will have authority to “approve a special use permit for a vacant or unoccupied building, structure or property where the original or permitted use is no longer feasible, regardless of whether the proposed repurpose use for said vacant or unoccupied building, structure or property is expressly prohibited (by chapter 300 of the city code).”

The city of Cortland Common Council will also hold a public hearing on the proposed law at its meeting on April 4. City council previously held a public hearing at its March 7 meeting.

A full breakdown of the city’s proposed property redevelopment law can be seen here on pages 42-44 in the supporting documents folder from the March 21 Common Council meeting.
