The village of Homer Board of Trustees honored Don Ferris, the longtime and now-retired Homer News editor and publisher, at its meeting earlier this week.

The village had a plaque made for Ferris, commemorating his 10-year run at the head of the bi-weekly newspaper.

Village Mayor Hal McCabe praised Ferris for 10 years of work, and reflected on the importance of the Homer News.

“It’s a huge thing for the village,” McCabe said.

Ferris thanked village officials as he put a bow on his tenure with the bi-weekly newspaper.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I was an implement.”

The village posted a Facebook page congratulating Ferris on his retirement on Wednesday.

“The village would like to thank (Ferris) for all his years of service on the Homer News making it a success,” the post read. “Thank you for keeping the village residents informed. You made the residents look forward to the next issue and residents will continue to do so under its new management.”

One of Ferris’ favorite parts about the job was the community support he received.

“When I came on, there were 50 or so advertisers,” he said. “Most of them have stayed.”

The Center for the Arts of Homer, now the publishers of the Homer News, bought the paper in January. Kim Hubbard will take over as the editor. The new owners could not be reached for comment.
