Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Marathon (PBR Lumber Yard Classic Round #1)

The McGraw Eagles defeated Marathon in the opening round of the PBR Lumber Yard Classic at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Saturday with a score of 3-1. 

McGraw was led by Thomas Lea (1 hit & 1 run), Riley VanLiew (1 hit), Blair Mulcahy (8 strikeouts thrown & 1 hit), Brennan Wilson (1 RBI), Nate Stiles (1 Home-Run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jaydon Bassett (2 strikeouts thrown & 1 hit). 

Marathon was led by Blake Birdsall (2 hits), Jacob Byron (1 hit), Camdyn Kashuba (1 hit & 1 RBI), Braydin Drake (1 run), and Zachary Birdsall (5 strikeouts thrown).

“I thought it was a really well played game between both teams,” said McGraw Coach . “It was the first game of the season, and it kind of got the rust knocked off. It was definitely shaky in the first couple of innings. Nerves were definitely a factor for both teams, but I thought that throughout the game we were more patient at the plate. We started to put the ball into play with some hard hits and were able to move some of our guys around. Nate Stiles came up with a big hit for us with a two-run Home-Run, so that really helped to energize our team.”

The McGraw Eagles lost in the final round of their PBR Lumber Yard Classic tournament with a final score of 12-24 against Stockbridge Valley.

McGraw was led by Riley VanLiew (1 hit), Thomas Lea (1 hit & 1 RBI), Blair Mulcahy (2 runs), Brennan Wilson (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Calob Sutton (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Nate Stiles (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 3 strikeouts thrown), Blake Bergey (1 run, 1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Nick Sutton (4 runs, 4 hits & 3 RBI’s), and Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown),  

Stockbridge Valley was led by Benjamin Jantzi (4 runs, 5 hits, 3 RBI’s & 9 strikeouts thrown), Jack Cross (3 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Tristan Ellerbruch (2 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Riley LaLonde (3 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Carter Highers (4 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Evan Enslow (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Charlie Cross (4 runs, 4 hits & 6 RBI’s), Kaden Wilson (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), and Marcus Moot (1 strikeout thrown).

McGraw is now scheduled to play Cato-Meridian at home on Wednesday (April 12th) at 5pm.

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Richfield Springs (PBR Lumber Yard Classic Consolation Game)

The Marathon Olympians defeated Richfield Springs 15-5 in the consolation game of the PBR Lumber Yard Classic tournament on Saturday. 

Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (2 runs, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 4 strikeouts thrown), Zachary Birdsall (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Blake Birdsall (3 runs, 3 hits & 1 strikeout thrown), Tristin Byron (1 run & 1 RBI), Jeffery Daugherty (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Braydin Drake (2 runs, 1 Home-Run, 5 hits, 4 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Riley Stewart (2 runs), Camdyn Kashuba (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Eli Hoyt (1 hit), Barrett Trabucco (1 hit), and Jonathan Forrest (1 hit). 

Richfield Springs was led by Bradyn Dunckel (1 run & 2 hits), Ethan Evangelow (1 run), Landen Schultz (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Dallas Miller (1 run), and Devin Hallenbeck-Heap (2 hits & 3 RBI’s), and Aiden Ducnkel (2 strikeouts thrown).

Marathon’s next game is scheduled to be played on the road against Moravia on Monday (April 3rd) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Carthage

The Homer Trojans improved to a 1-1 overall record after defeating Carthage 8-7 in double overtime this past Saturday. 

Homer was led by Reid Partis (4 goals & 1 assist), Daniel Stiles (2 goals & 3 assists), Hunter Riehlman (2 assists), Cooper Swartz (2 goals), Evan Butts (1 assist), and Ben Bradshaw (11 saves). 

Carthage was led by Marcus Hickey (3 goals), Ashton Norton (2 goals), Josh Bigelow (1 goal & 2 assists), Kayden Paquette (1 goal), and Corey Decker (14 saves).

Homer is now scheduled to host Watertown at Homer High School this Tuesday (April 4th) at 5:30pm.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough game against Cazenovia with a final score of 5-19 on Saturday. 

This was Homer’s first game of the regular season. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (1 goal & 1 assist), Gracie Newman (1 goal), Kendall Young (1 goal), Maria Partis (2 goals), and Aislynn Cobb (1 save).

Cazenovia was led by Madison DeAngelis (3 goals & 3 assists), Riley Knapp (5 goals), Charlie Prior (4 goals & 1 assist), Julia Reff (1 goal & 2 assists), Maren Smith (1 goal & 2 assist),Katie Rajkowski (2 goals), Sally Hughes (1 goal & 1 assist), Hayden Bubble (1 goal), Izzy Stromer-Galley (1 goal), Reid McMurtrie (1 assist), and Olivia Lints (3 saves). 

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against LaFayette on Monday (April 10th) at 6:45pm.
