Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 12th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Cazenovia Wednesday evening.

The Homer boys’ team lost with a team score of 20-121, while the Homer girls’ team lost 29-112.

Here are some highlights from both Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the discus event (Result - 106’0”). He also placed 3rd in the shot put event (37’0”). Both of Darling’s throws qualify him for Sectionals.
  • Jonah Campos placed 2nd in both the shot put event (Result - 40’2.5”) and the discus event (Result - 104’8”). Both of his throws qualify him for Sectionals.
  • Oliver Kida came in 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 72.6). He also came in 3rd in the 110 meter hurdles event (Time - 21.0).
  • Gabe Austin placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.0). Austin’s time qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Caleb Ficchi placed 3rd in the pole vault event Result (7’0”). 
  • Nick Costa (12.2), Michael Thalheimer (13.8) and Dwight Eldridge (14.2) ran personal best times in the 100 meter dash. Costa’s time qualifies him for Sectionals.

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in both the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.7) and the 400 meter run (Time - 62.1). She also came in 2nd in the 200 meter run (Time - 27.7). With her result, Aagaard qualified for sectionals in all three events.
  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 32’5”). She also placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 4’4”).
  • Jane Gugerty won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.8) Her time qualifies her for Sectionals.
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 2nd in the discus event (Result - 67’6”). She also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 26’1”).
  • Mia Knight placed 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:01.7).

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Tigers competed in a dual meet against Fulton Wednesday afternoon.

The Cortland boys’ team lost with a team score of 62-69, while the Cortland girls’ team lost 41-97.

Here are some highlights from both Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 40’6.25”). He also placed 2nd in both the 100 meter dash (Time - 11.4) and the long jump event (Result - 18’3”)
  • Spenser Dodds won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:01.3)
  • Brady Pennock placed 2nd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:01.9)
  • Austin Lind came in 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time - 60.8)
  • Feodor Kalytyuk came in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:22.8)
  • Logan Griffin placed 2nd in the 200 meter run (Time - 26.9)
  • Duncan Harbin won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 39’5”). He also came in 2nd in the discus event (Result - 111’1”)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the discus event (Result - 128’9). He also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 37’10.5”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 33’7.25”)
  • Iniko Abani won 1st place in the high jump event (Result - 5’4”). He also placed 3rd in the long jump event (Result - 17’7”)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush won 1st place in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 17.4). She also placed 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 13’1”)
  • Sarah Williams won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time 81.9). She also placed 3rd in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 19.4)
  • Bailey Dintino won 1st place in the long jump event (Result - 13’9”). She also came in 2nd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.6)
  • Ruby Mullally placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:56.6). She also came in 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:02.3)
  • Brianna Bergene came in 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:08.6)
  • Giovanna Perfetti came in 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time - 87.9)
  • Rileigh Madden won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”)
  • Ashley Merritt placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 6’0”)
  • Morgann Doane came in 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 29’2.5”). She also placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 4’2”)
  • Maude Terwilliger placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 29’0.5”)

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians lost 4-10 against Southern Cayuga, making them fall to an overall record of 1-5. 

“I felt like we played much better tonight,” said Marathon Head Coach Bryan Hoyt. “We hit the ball, fielded it well, and overall competed. We struggled in the second inning with a couple of errors but after that, I was proud of the way the boys bounced back. They started making plays and just played hard.”

According to coach Hoyt, Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (2 runs & 2 hits), Zachary Birdsall (1 run, 1 RBI & 6 strikeouts thrown), and Blake Birdsall (1 hit & 1 RBI). 

Southern Cayuga was mainly led by Isaac Brozon (3 hits & 3 runs), John Kreydates (2 hits & 3 RBI’s), and James Hauptfleisch (5 strikeouts thrown).

Up next, Marathon will play Thomas A Edison on the road today (Thursday, April 13th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Cato-Meridian

The McGraw Eagles improved to a 2-1 record after defeating Cato-Meridian with a final score of 11-5. 

McGraw was led by Riley VanLiew (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Thomas Lea (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Blair Mulcahy (2 runs, 3 hits & 7 strikeouts thrown), Brennan Wilson (2 runs & 2 hits), Calob Sutton (1 runs & 1 hit), Nate Stiles (1 run & 1 hit), Blake Bergey (3 hits & 1 RBI), Nick Sutton (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 3 hits, 3 RBI’s & 8 strikeouts thrown).

McGraw will host Stockbridge Valley at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Friday (April 14th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to an overall record of 1-2 after losing to Union Springs Wednesday evening. 

According to Marathon Head Coach Jamie Bush, the Lady Olympians lost the game with a score of 1-28.

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road against Southern Cayuga on Monday (April 17th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans improved to a 1-1 record after beating Mexico Wednesday afternoon. 

Homer won the match with a team score of 3-2.

Homer is now scheduled to play Pulaski on the road this Friday (April 14th) at 4:30pm.
