City woman steals thousands of dollars from victim

An individual was arrested this past Friday after stealing thousands of dollars from a female victim, according to a City of Cortland police report.

Junaidah B. Sweeney, of Cortland, was a cleaner and worker for the victim who lives on East Avenue, the report stated.

A complaint to city police stated that Sweeney was “stealing money” from the victim, along with checks missing from her home. The investigation conducted by city police revealed that Sweeney stole $4,000 between Jan. 18 and March 7 of this year by forging checks and cashing them.

Sweeney was charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument (a Class-D Felony) and third-degree grand larceny (a Class-D Felony). She was arraigned, released and now due to appear in city court on May 17.
