Process begins for new pickleball, tennis courts at park in Cortland

The process has begun to implement new pickleball and tennis courts at a park in the city of Cortland, according to the Cortland Youth Bureau (CYB) director.

CYB director Andrea Piedigrossi told The Cortland Voice on Wednesday morning that work has begun to put in two tennis courts and eight pickleball courts at Randall Park.

Pending work schedules, equipment supply and the weather, Piedigrossi is hoping the courts will be available for public use right before the summer season.

“I know pickleball is gaining popularity and I’m excited to bring eight additional courts to Cortland, which will draw players from all over CNY,” she said.

CYB’s plan is to send out request-for-proposals next week, Piedigrossi said. The projected cost of the entire project, which is subject to change, is $150,000. Piedigrossi added monies for the project will come from the city’s American Rescue Plan funding and private donors.

“This is the first piece of the Randall Park renovation and I’m thankful we have community members who value the parks and want to help us improve our amenities,” Piedigrossi said.

Piedigrossi noted the city last week removed the old light poles and fencing. The remainder of the fence, she added, will be removed this week (weather pending).

The city will soon remove the current blacktop and surface, and expand the sub-base. It will be followed by new blacktop, court surfacing and lines, Piedigrossi said.

Piedigrossi added the full blueprint for the courts is 100-feet by 120-feet, extending from the current 100-feet by 100-feet. The pickleball courts themselves are 44-feet by 20-feet, she added.

CYB has been receiving help from the city’s Department of Public Works on the project, Piedigrossi said.

“DPW has been a great help,” she added. “They are able to assist with the (demolition) and other work needed to complete the project. We’re lucky to have such a great crew.”
