A man was arrested on Wednesday after he was found to have stolen thousands in social services benefits, according to a report.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office report stated that Laroy F. Nelson, 40 of Cortland, stole $7,100 in benefits.

Between September 2021 and November 2022, Nelson failed to report required information to the Cortland County Department of Social Services, the report noted. Nelson also filed fraudulent documents to the county’s social services department.

Nelson was charged with two counts of first-degree offering a false instrument (a Class-E Felony), and third-degree welfare fraud and grand larceny (both Class-D Felonies). He was arraigned, released and is now due to appear in Cortland city court on May 17.
