Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 22nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Softball: 1st Annual Marathon Maple Bucket Spring Fling Tournament (Marathon, Cortland, Cincinnatus & McGraw)

The Marathon Lady Olympians hosted their first annual “Maple Bucket” Marathon Spring Fling Tournament this past Saturday.

Participating teams of this tournament included Marathon, Cortland, Cincinnatus, and McGraw. 

Cortland defeated McGraw 16-1, while Cincinnatus beat Marathon 4-1 in the first round. 

Marathon then won 18-1 against McGraw in the consolation game to take third place. 

Cortland ended up winning the tournament after beating Cincinnatus with a final score of 17-2 in the championship round.

Cortland was led by Sophie Mayer (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Brenna Hogan (2 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Claire Turner (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Andrea West (1 run & 2 RBI’s), Kaitlyn Egolf (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Lauren Mott (2 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Molly Steve (1 hit & 1 RBI), Kaedyn Murphy (3 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Mallory Turner (1 run & 1 hit), Madison Thompson (1 home-run, 1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), and Madalyn Thompson (1 run).

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (1 run & 1 RBI), Madison Stover (1 run), Payton Gerrard (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Gabby Taylor (1 hit), and Kayle Brenchley (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland’s shortstop Sophie Mayer was voted as the Tournament MVP.

According to Marathon Head Coach Jamie Bush, “Cortland will now be responsible to bring the bucket (Maple Bucket) back next year filled with treats, and see if they can keep the bucket and title.”

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough game against Cazenovia with a score of 4-12. 

Note: stats of the game were not made available by the time this article was written. 

With this loss, Homer now holds a 2-5 record. 

Homer is now scheduled to take on Skaneateles on the road on Tuesday (April 25th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Chenango Valley

The Homer Trojans won 11-9 against Chenango Valley on Saturday. With this win, Homer now holds a 3-4 record. 

Homer was led by Tristan Allen (3 runs, 3 hits, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Noah Young (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Mitchell Earle (2 runs & 1 hit), Jeffrey Stauber (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Maddox Johnson (1 run, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Anderson Read (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Eli McMahon (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Andrew Kline (1 strikeout thrown). 

Chenango Valley was led by Grayson Flanagan (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 strikeouts thrown), Jimmy Fitzgerald (1 run & 1 hit), Alex Telfer (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Tyler-John Adams (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Anthony Thatcher (1 run & 1 RBI), Chase Hanyon (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Dominic Steen (2 hits & 1 RBI), Dana Testani (1 hit), and Ryan Milk (1 strikeout thrown). 

Homer’s next game will be played at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex against Dryden this Tuesday (April 25th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. East Syracuse Minoa (ESM)

The Cortland Lady Tigers beat ESM 13-11 in order to improve to a 2-5 record on Saturday. 

Cortland was led by Gabrielle Cranfield (5 goals & 2 assists), Valerosa Gambitta (4 goals), Aubree Larkin (2 goals & 1 assist), and Olivia Magin (2 goals). 

ESM was led by Rylyn Commisso (3 goals), Mary Grace Godleski (2 goals & 1 assist), Morgan Purcell (2 goals), Sophia Ferns (1 goal), Maureen McGinley (1 goal), Anna Paduano (1 goal), Laura Markert (1 goal), Jaelynn Aldrich (2 assists), and Madison Wood (1 assist).

Cortland’s next game will be played at home against Auburn on Tuesday (April 25th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Chenango Valley

The Cortland Tigers fell to an overall record of 4-5 after losing to Chenango Valley with a final score of 10-12. 

Cortland was led by Finn Thomas (1 goal), Ryan Kline (1 goal), Benjamin McGrath (4 goals & 4 assists), Bodey McGrath (2 goals & 1 assist), Mark Darling (1 goal), and Blaze Barber (1 goal). 

Chenango Valley was led by Nate Marinaro (5 goals & 2 assists), Robert Clark (2 goals), Carter Klein (1 goal), Allessandro Testani (1 goal), Aiden Granger (2 goals & 4 assists), and Dominic Bevilacqua (1 goal & 2 assists). 

Up next, Cortland will play Auburn on the road this Tuesday (April 25th) at 7pm.

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (Johnson CIty Square Deal Invitational)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Johnson CIty Square Deal Invitational on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Jonah Campos placed 4th in the shot put event (Result - 41’3”). His throw qualifies him for the State Qualifier.
  • Logan Darling threw a personal best in the discus throw (Result - 119’7”). His throw qualified him for the State Qualifier.
  • Damian Brown ran a 5:10.94 in the 1,600 meter run, which qualifies him for sectionals

Homer Girls

  • Camdyn Cole placed 3rd in the long jump (Result -15’9”). She also got 5th place in the triple jump (Result - 31’10.5”). Her long jump performance qualifies her for Sectionals.
  • Jane Gugerty came in 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.95).
  • Ingrid Aagaard placed 4th in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.71). She also came in 6th in the 200 meter run (Time - 28.13).
