A man who stole electronics from a building last August received his prison sentencing on Tuesday at Cortland County Court.

John C. Delaney, 42, was sentenced to 2-to-4 years in prison after he recently pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny (a Class-D Felony). He was originally charged with third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary (both Class-D Felonies), and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property (a Class-E Felony).

Around 4 a.m. on Aug. 15 of last year, Delaney broke into a building on Crawford Street in Cortland by “forcing open a metal exterior door,” according to a city police report.

The report stated that Delaney stole $5,400 worth of electronics and goods – including three Microsoft Surface Pro 7 computer tablets worth $900 each, a silver HP Elitebook 850 G4 valued at $1,400; three black ACER chromebooks at $300 each, a black Xbox 360 slim at $300, two brown and white backpacks with various charger cords valued at $100, and a green umbrella.

In his initial attempt to break in, Delaney caused two dents to the exterior metal door. This caused over $250 in damages, leading to a replacement of the entire door at a cost of $700, the report noted.

Delaney chose to not appeal his sentencing in county court on Tuesday.

According to court documents, Delaney has been arrested five times between August of last year and January of this year. Charges he received from those arrests included a couple of first-degree falsifying business records (a Class-E Felony) charges, a couple of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property (Class-A Misdemeanors) charges, a few third-degree criminal mischief (Class-E Felonies) charges, petit larceny, third-degree burglary and more.

Details on the outcome of these arrests have yet to be determined.
