A park in the city of Cortland will soon have a new playground, according to the Cortland Youth Bureau (CYB) director.

CYB director Andrea Piedigrossi told The Cortland Voice on Wednesday that Yaman Park on Kennedy Parkway will have a brand-new playground by this summer (pending delivery), completely replacing the current one.

Piedigrossi noted that much like the current playground at Yaman Park, the new playground will have a “toddler focus.”

The new playground will be stylized as a mini city, Piedigrossi said. It will include a playhouse, garden crawl tunnel, and “community helpers.” The new setup will also include a new swing set with therapeutic, generation, and bucket and belt swings.

The total cost of the playground and the fibar-engineered wood surfacing is $72,000.

Piedigrossi mentioned that this new playground is the first of its kind in Cortland and surrounding communities.

“It’s something new that includes sensory play to help their development and growth,” she added.

The new playground, which will have a mix of blue, green, yellow and red colors, is a mash-up of traditional playgrounds and modern-looking ones.

“We have the traditional playground equipment, but we are incorporating the mini city where kids can use their imagination with the playhouse and community helpers building,” Piedigrossi said.

Piedigrossi thanked the Yaman Foundation for its contributions to Yaman Park improvements, including its involvement in the new playground project. She also gave a special shoutout to Dotty Kelly, an advocate for CYB.
