Update: Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 5th & 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s and Saturday’s events:

Friday May 5th

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated the McGraw Lady Eagles in a Cortland County rivalry game with a score of 17-2.

Up next, Cincinnatus is scheduled to take on Otselic Valley on the road today (May 8th) at 4:30pm; while McGraw also hits the road to play Stockbridge Valley at 4:30pm today (May 8th). 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt (Double-Header)

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers played a double-header against Jamesville-Dewitt at Onondaga Community College Friday afternoon. 

Cortland lost both games, bringing their overall record down to 8-6.

Jamesville-Dewitt’s runs were scored by Emily Bulone (2 runs), Amanda Aitken (1 run), Kayla McQuaid (1 run), Sophia Zoghby (1 run), and Savannah Schnorr (1 run).

The Lady Tigers were led by Aliza McCormick (1 run & 1 hit), Jadyn Willey (1 hit), Kaitlyn Egolf (1 hit), and Brenna Hogan (4 strikeouts thrown).  

Jamesville-Dewitt’s runs were scored by Kayla McQuaid (4 runs), Savannah Schnorr (3 runs), Amanda Aitken (3 runs), Addison Bufis (2 runs), Lyla Commandeur (2 runs), Emily Bulone (2 runs), Hannah Trevisani (1 run), Sophia Zoghby (1 run), Madelyn Murphy (1 run), Kaira McMahon (1 run), and Celia Linkiewicz (1 run). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play Oswego on the road today (May 8th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Trumansburg

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to an overall record of 5-9 after losing to Trumansburg with a final score of 3-22. 

Note: stats of the game were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Marathon will now prepare to take on Whitney Point at home today (May 8th) at 4:30pm.

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to an overall record of 9-5 after losing a tight game vs. Auburn. Cortland lost the game with a score of 0-1 on Friday. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Luke Rogoff (1 hit), and Owen Johnson (1 hit). 

Auburn was led by Noah Morrison (1 run & 1 hit), Myles McBride (1 hit), Jason Irwin (1 hit), Caden Becker (1 hit), and Owen Birchard (8 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Cortland will take on Dryden at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (May 8th) at 5pm.

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Morrisville-Eaton

The McGraw Eagles lost a tough game against Morrisville-Eaton with a score of 3-13 Friday afternoon. 

McGraw was led by Calob Sutton (1 run & 1 hit), Nathan Stiles (1 run & 1 hit), Nick Sutton (1 run), Brennan Wilson (1 hit), Blair Mulcahy (1 hit), Blake Bergey (7 strikeouts thrown), and Jaydon Bassett (7 strikeouts thrown). 

Morrisville-Eaton was led by Evan Baker (3 runs & 4 hits), Riley Dooley (3 runs & 2 hits), James Dapson (2 runs & 2 hits), Jesse Soden (2 runs & 2 hits), Lincoln Dapson (1 run & 1 hit), Cale Marland (1 run, 2 hits & 2 strikeouts thrown), Evan Stewart (1 run & 3 strikeouts thrown)

McGraw then played against Tully at the Doubleday Field in Cooperstown on Saturday (May 6th) at 1:30pm. See below for a recap of that game. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Vestal

The Marathon Lady Olympians played against Vestal Friday evening. Marathon recorded a team score of 216. (Note: Vestal was not able to record a team score due to them not having a full team).

Varsity Boys Golf: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles played against Stockbridge Valley Friday afternoon. McGraw won the match with a team score of 296-309 (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (Ed Wadas Invitational)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Ed Wadas Invitational in Whitesboro on Friday against multiple schools. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Damian Brown qualified for Sectionals in the 3,200 after running  a personal best time of 11:12.33
  • Levi Guay qualified for sectionals after running a personal best time of 68.07 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles 

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagard placed 2nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:24.78). Her time was a personal best. 
  • Natalie Funk (74.2), Camdyn Cole (70.8), Jane Gugerty (69.2), and Ingrid Aagaard (64.8) placed 6th in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:39.06.

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Schools (REK Norwich)

The Cincinnatus Lions competed in the REK Norwich meet on Friday against multiple schools. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Elijah Cree came in 4th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:21.74)
  • Elijah Fuller placed 5th in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 12:17.96)
  • Trevor Shevalier got 4th place in the high jump event (Result - 5’04”). He also placed 5th in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:05.30)

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Justice Crane placed 2nd in the high jump event (Result - 4’08”)
  • Madelyn Pittsley came in 3rd in the long jump event (Result - 15’06.50”) 

Saturday May 6th

With this loss, McGraw has fallen to an overall record of 7-7.
