Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 8th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Dryden

The Cortland Purple Tigers got back on track after defeating Dryden with a score of 12-2 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Monday evening. With this win, Cortland improved to a 10-5 record. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Caden Albright (1 homerun, 2 total runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Andrew Partigianoni (2 runs & 1 hit), Luke Rogoff (2 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Christopher Yang (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Owen Johnson (1 run, 1 RBI & 3 strikeouts thrown), Liam Woodard (1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Antonio Terrazas (1 run), Danny Jackson (1 run), Cal Albright (1 run & 1 strikeout thrown), and Tyler Gilbert (1 hit). 

Dryden was led by Connor Casterline (1 RBI), Daniel Murphy (1 RBI), Owen Strickland (1 hit & 7 strikeouts thrown), Christopher Greene (1 run), Collin Weik (1 run), and Brody Casterline (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland is now scheduled to host East Syracuse Minoa at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Thursday (May 11th) at 5pm.  

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles fell to an overall record of 7-8 after losing to Stockbridge Valley with a score of 2-8. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Jaydon Bassett (1 run & 6 strikeouts thrown), and Nick Sutton (1 hit).

Note: individual stats for Stockbridge Valley were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, McGraw will play Otselic Valley on Friday (May 12th) at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game on the road with a score of 3-13 Monday evening. 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 5-7.

Homer’s next game will be played at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (May 9th) against Solvay at 4:30pm.

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost 0-4 against Oswego on the road, making them fall to an 8-7 record. 

Cortland was led by Mallory Turner (1 hit) and Brenna Hogan (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Oswego was led by Maria Sweet (1 run, 1 hit & 9 strikeouts thrown), Adriana Ellis (1 run & 1 hit), Malia Upcraft (2 hits), Emery O'Brien (1 run), and Clara O'Connor (1 run). 

Cortland will now look forward to playing against East Syracuse Minoa at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this Wednesday (May 10th) at 4:30pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to a 4-7 record after defeating Skaneateles at home with a close score of 6-5. 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 run, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Khloe Young (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Allyson Verfuss (1 run & 1 hit), Lyla Read (1 run & 1 RBI), and Jenna Henderson (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Skaneateles was led by Ayla Pas'cal (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Lainey Lowe (1 run & 2 hits), Ellie Walsh (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI),  Katie Combs (1 run & 1 hit), Chelsea Metz (1 run & 1 hit), and Grace Wagner (1 RBI & 8 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to host Solvay at Homer high school today (May 9th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a tough game against Otselic Valley with a score of 1-5. With this loss, Cincinnatus now holds an 8-4 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (1 run & 1 hit), Madison Stover (2 hits), Kayle Brenchley (1 hit & 9 strikeouts thrown). 

Otselic Valley was led by Cassidy Will (1 run & 1 hit & 12 strikeouts thrown), Paige Will (2 runs & 2 hits), Riley Bartlett (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Gracie Rooker (2 hits), Tori Foster (1 hit), and Emma Rooker (1 hit).

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against DeRuyter today (May 9th) at 4:30pm.

The McGraw Lady Eagles fell to a 2-12 record after losing to Stockbridge Valley with a final score of 2-19 after five innings. 

McGraw’s runs were scored by Jaden Marshall (1 run) and Haylee Bassett (1 run). McGraw pitcher Adrianna Stacconi threw 2 strikeouts in the game. 

Stockbridge Valley was led by Kiley Snow (3 runs), Abby Reed (3 runs, 1 hit, 4 RBI’s & 12 strikeouts thrown), Elizabeth Shaver (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Layla Jayson (2 runs & 4 RBI’s), Alissa Mazzye (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Kendra Genge (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Paige Webb (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Payton Graham (2 runs), and Alexis Mazzye (2 runs). 

McGraw is now scheduled to host Morrisville-Eaton at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (May 9th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Whitney Point

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Whitney Point after a tight game with a score of 12-11.

With this win, Marathon improved to a 6-9 overall record. 

Marathon’s next game will be played at home this Wednesday (May 10th) against Cincinnatus at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles played against DeRuyter Monday afternoon. McGraw lost the match with a team score of 255-245 (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

The Marathon Olympians played against Union Springs and Southern Cayuga Monday afternoon. Marathon lost the match against Union Springs with a score of 210-151, but won against Southern Cayuga with a score of 210-235. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to a 2-9 record after losing to Syracuse with a score of 5-13 on the road Monday night. 

Homer was led by Ella Spanbauer (3 goals), Maria Partis (2 goals), Caleigh Stone (1 assist), Caitlin McCloy (1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (1 assist), Brayden Partigianoni (1 assist), Caitlin McCloy (5 saves), and Aislynn Cobb (2 saves).  

Syracuse was led by Alayna Wood (3 goals & 2 assists), Brigid Burns (3 goals), Abigail Delaney (2 goals & 1 assist), Shannon Smith (2 goals), Nora Burns (1 goal & 1 assist), Jane Klivak (1 goal), and Cecilia Witherel (1 goal).

Up next, Homer will play Cazenovia on the road tonight (May 9th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Fulton with a team score of 4-3 Monday afternoon. 

Cortland’s Tyler Cranfield won his 1st singles matchup in straight sets (6-0 & 6-0) against Fulton’s Vinny Salerno. 

Jeremy Hale Jr & Corey Smith won their 1st doubles match in two sets (7-6 (7-3) & 6-1) against Fulton’s Alan Craig and Jordan Thurlow.

Cortland’s 2nd doubles team of Andre Myers & Wrangler Vanslyke also won in straight sets (6-3 & 6-2) against Fenix Robinson and Ayden Cusic.  

Kyle Fulton won his 2nd singles match by Forfeit.

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Weedsport, Faith Heritage & DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lions competed in a meet at DeRuyter high school against Weedsport, Faith Heritage & DeRuyter Monday afternoon.

Note: Official results of the meet are yet to be made available. We will post results from Cincinnatus when they’re made available.
