The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated the Cincinnatus Lady Lions in a Cortland county matchup Wednesday afternoon.

This was both Marathon’s and Cincinnatus’ second matchup of the season. They first played each other in April at the “Marathon Maple Bucket Spring Fling Tournament”, where Cincinantus beat Marathon 4-1.

However, Marathon won Wednesday night’s game with a final score of 19-7 after five innings.

“We overcame some big errors today that could have cost us the game, but we got back into it,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “The girls were patient at the plate for the most part, which was huge. We’ve been stressing that all year.”

Marathon’s runs were scored by Brook Morsey (3 runs), Cassandra Forrest (3 runs), Izabella Conklin (2 runs), Delaney Reilly (2 runs), Haylee Chrysler (2 runs), Marissa Allen (2 runs), Audrey Jasper (2 runs), Ellery Ensign (1 run), Ashlynn Layton (1 run), and Melodie Sutton (1 run).

Cincinnatus’ runs were scored by Payton Gerrard (3 runs), Lucy Finch (1 run), Kaylee Brenchley (1 run), Maddison Streichert (1 run), and Jarisa Temple.

With this result, Marathon improved to a 7-9 record, while Cincinnatus fell to 10-5.

“This was definitely a game we needed,” stated coach Bush. “This puts us in sectionals. This win puts us at 50% in Class D, so we are automatically in regardless of Friday’s game. I told the girls that if we win this one and the one on Friday night, it will put us with a home game for sectionals, which is huge for us. We play well at home normally.”

Up next, Marathon is scheduled to play on the road against Norwich on Friday (May 12th) at 4:30pm; while Cincinnatus plays Stockbridge Valley on the road on Friday (May 12th) at 4:30pm.

Both Marathon and Cincinnatus are scheduled to play each other one last time this regular season on Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm. Their game will take place at Cincinnatus high school.
