Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Onondaga

The Homer Trojans won with a team score of 4-1 against Onondaga on senior night Thursday afternoon. 

Three Homer seniors (Nik Kruman, Jackson Henderson & Matthew Fagerheim) were recognized at yesterday’s game. 

Here are the individual results from yesterday’s games:

  • First Singles: Jackson Henderson (Homer) lost to Jon Massaro (Onondaga) in three sets - (6-2, 3-6 & 5-7)
  • Second Singles: Randolph Kruman (Homer) won against Faith Taylor (Onondaga) in two sets - (6-0 & 6-0)
  • Third Singles: Matthew Fagerheim (Homer) won against Callisthene Vonderweidt (Onondaga) in two sets - (7(7)-6(3) & 6-4)
  • First Doubles: Drew Cotterill & Caleb Hanson (Homer) won against Caleb Fowler & Evelynn Loan (Onondaga) in two sets - (6-0 & 6-0)
  • Second Doubles: Nicolas Barbieri & Frederick Thalheimer (Homer) won against Maggieann Morris & Melissa Sanborn (Onondaga) in three sets - (1-6, 7(7)-6(5) & 7(10)-6(7))

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers played Auburn Thursday afternoon.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Trumansburg 

The Marathon Olympians hosted Trumansburg at the Maple Hill Golf Course on senior night Thursday afternoon. 

According to Marathon head coach Sydney Jennison, Marathon won the match due to Trumansburg not having a full roster to record a team score. Marathon ended up recording a team score of 210 in yesterday’s match.

Marathon’s next match will be played at the Maple Hill Golf Course against Groton on Monday (May 15th) at 3:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Odessa-Montour & Elmira

The Marathon Lady Olympians competed in a three-way match against Odessa-Montour and Elmira at the Hillendale Country Club in Ithaca Thursday afternoon.

The Cortland Purple Tigers improved to an 11-5 record after beating East Syracuse Minoa with a close score of 2-0. 

Cortland was led by Andrew Partigianoni (1 run & 2 hits), Danny Jackson (3 hits & 1 RBI), Ethan Johnson (2 hits), Luke Rogoff (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Tyler Gilbert (1 run & 1 hit), and Zach Muir (1 strikeout thrown). 

ESM was led by Nick Comisso (2 hits), Kevin Stewart (2 hits), Trey Bova (1 hit), Joseph Federico (1 hit), AJ Graham (1 hit), and Carter Stewart (9 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Cortland will play ESM on the road tonight (May 12th) at 4:45pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans defeated Chittenango with a final score of 12-2 in order to improve to a 7-7 overall record. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jeffrey Stauber (2 runs & 1 hit), Tristan Allen (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Anderson Read (2 runs, 1 hiit & 1 RBI), Tyler VanEtten (1 run, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Maddox Johnson (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 8 strikeouts thrown), Graydon Hickey (1 run & 1 hit), Noah Young (1 run), Evan Sullivan (1 run), Eli McMahon (1 hit), and Jacob Griffin (1 RBI).

Chittenango was led by Tyrus Kelly (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Zailor Caras (1 run), Carlos Torres-Carman (1 hit), Mason Corlis (3 strikeouts thrown), and Cooper Smith (1 strikeout thrown).

Homer’s next game will be played at the Doubleday Field in Cooperstown against Marcellus today (May 12th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Olympians ended their season with an overall record of 1-15 after losing a tough game on the road against Newfield. Marathon lost the game with a close score of 8-13. 

Marathon’s runs were scored by Braydin Drake (2 runs), Zachary Birdsall (2 runs), Jacob Byron (1 run), Tristin Byron (1 run), Camdyn Kashuba (1 run), and Austin Poth (1 run). 

Newfield’s runs were scored by Andrew Brechner (2 runs), Zephyr Ramsey (2 runs), Jackson Nelson (2 runs), Arthur Sheshabarov (2 runs), Austin Jenney (2 runs), Joshua Donley (1 run), and Connor Lynch (1 run).

“We had control of the game until the 5th inning,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “I thought Camdyn threw a nice game. We hit the ball well and defended all night. We just couldn’t find the strike zone in the 5th and they had some timely hitting. I’d like to congratulate my seniors Braydin Drake, Tristin Byron, Jon Forrest, and Eli Hoyt on wonderful careers. All four of them are great young men and great examples of what student athletes should be.”

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 1-15 against Chittenango Thursday evening. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 4-9. 

Homer was led by Cecelia Rappleyea (1 run & 1 hit), Khloe Young (1 hit), Allyson Verfuss (1 hit), Catherine Apker (1 hit), Lyla Read (1 hit), and Jenna Henderson (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Chittenango’s runs were scored by Stephanie Huckabee (3 runs), Brianna Tooke (3 runs), Alivia Cavotta (3 runs), Carmella Furco (2 runs), Margaret Bielicki (2 runs), Anna Cavotta (1 run), and Hannah Eddy (1 run). 

According to the Homer athletics website, Homer is scheduled to host Cortland at Homer high school today (May 12th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 3-14 against Central Square, making them fall to an overall record of 6-10. 

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (2 goals), Joe Banewicz (1 goal), and Declan Vail (11 saves).

Central Square’s goals were scored by Nick Winks (5 goals), Evan Whewell (4 goals), Braden Lucas (1 goal), Cole Barnhart (1 goal), Austin Harmer (1 goal), Aaron Bergquist (1 goal), and Matt Davis (1 goal).

This was Cortland’s last game of the regular season.

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers fell to a 3-8 record after losing a tight game against Syracuse Thursday night. Cortland lost the game with a score of 6-8. 

Cortland’s goals were scored by Valerosa Gambitta (3 goals), Aubree Larkin (2 goals), and Olivia Magin (1 goal). 

Syracuse’s goals were scored by Alayna Wood (4 goals), Brigid Burns (3 goals), and Nora Burns (1 goal). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play Mexico on the road this Saturday (May 13th) at 11am. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 4-10 after losing a tough game against Skaneateles with a score of 3-19

Homer was led by Lauren Franco (1 goal & 1 assist), Ella Spanbauer (2 goals), Aislynn Cobb (3 saves), and Caitlin McCloy (2 saves).

Up next, Homer is scheduled to play Oswego on the road on Tuesday (May 16th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Syracuse Institute of Technology (ITC)

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Syracuse Institute of Technology Thursday evening.  

The Homer boys team lost with a team score of 45-95; while the Homer girls team won with a team score of 70-61. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Damian Brown won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:33.1) and the 3,200 meter run (Time - 12:45.8)
  • Jonah Campos won 1st place in the shot put (Result - 41’7”). He also got 2nd place in discus throw (Result - 123’4”)
  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 125’6”) He also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 36’10”)
  • Cooper Van Dee placed 2nd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.4). His time qualifies him for sectionals.
  • Caleb Fichhi came in 2nd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:35.9)
  • Orion Bennett placed 2nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:28.4)
  • Matt Fish finished 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:28.5)
  • Dylan Pittsley placed 3rd in the triple jump (Result - 35’7”)
  • Levi Guay placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 71.2)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.6), the 200 meter run (Time - 28.1), and the 400 meter run (Time - 63.0)
  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in the long jump event (Result - 15’3.5”) and in the triple jump (Result - 32’6.75”). She also placed 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 29.6)
  • Haley Tucker won 1st place in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:57.4). She also placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:00.3)
  • Hannah Bouwens won 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 73’5”). She also came in 2nd in the shot put (Result - 23’5.5”)
  • Mia Knight won 1st place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:00.3)
  • Haley Tucker (2:56.7), Mia Knight (2:54.1), Amelia Wagner (3:10.2), and Lydia Andre (3:10.9) won 1st place in the 4x800 meter relay (Time - 12:11.8)
  • Natalie Funk, Camdyn Cole, Jane Gugerty, and Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 53.9)
  • Sophie Kennett came in 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 78.4) and came in 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.8).
  • Amelia Wagner placed 2nd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 14:49.2)
  • Brynn Loomis finished 2nd in the discus throw (Result - 66’6”)
  • Ellie Ensign placed 3rd in the discus throw (Result - 61’4”)
  • Maggie Mahunik came in  3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:28.7)
  • Lydia Andre placed 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:52.6)
