Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 12th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (Oneonta Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Oneonta Invitational at Oneonta high school Friday evening.  

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland finished 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:05.34) and in the high jump event (Result - 5’10”)
  • Andrew Edsall finished 7th in the 1 mile run (Time - 4:59.69) and in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools (John Arcaro Co-Ed Classic)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the John Arcaro Co-Ed Classic at Baldwinsville high school Friday afternoon.  

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Duncan Harbin placed 4th in the shot put event (Result - 42’6”)
  • Bryan Honan finished 2nd in the discuss throw (Result - 144’2”)
  • Jack Phelan came in 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 43’3”)

Cortland Girls

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. East Syracuse Minoa (ESM)

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) on the road with a score of 2-3. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 11-6. 

Cortland was led by Andrew Partigianoni (1 run & 1 hit), Danny Jackson (1 run & 1 hit), Caden Albright (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), and Owen Johnson (1 strikeout thrown). 

ESM was led by Joseph Federico (1 run & 2 hits), Marlon Czajak Jr (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Daniel Gilkey (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Trey Bova (2 hits), Kevin Stewart (1 run), AJ Graham (1 hit), and Luke Liedka (9 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland is scheduled to play their last two games of the regular season in a double-header against Fulton at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Thursday (May 18th). First game starts at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans defeated Marcellus with a final score of 14-8 after nine innings Friday evening.

With this win, Homer improved to an 8-7 record. 

Up next, Homer will host Bishop Grimes at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Tuesday (May 16th) at 4:30pm.

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated the Homer Lady Trojans with a score of 10-3 at Homer high school Friday afternoon. 

With this result, Cortland improved to an overall record of 9-8; while Homer fell to an overall record of 4-10. 

Cortland was led by Mallory Turner (2 runs & 2 hits), Lauren Mott (1 run & 1 hit), Sophie Mayer (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Aliza McCormick (1 run & 3 RBI’s), Brenna Hogan (2 runs & 8 strikeouts thrown), Kaitlyn Egolf (1 runs), Claire Turner (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Molly Steve (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Andrea West (2 hits & 2 RBI’s).

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (1 run & 1 hit), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 run & 1 hit), Lyla Read (1 RBI), Kaylee Darling (1 run & 1 hit), Karigan Quaile (1 RBI), and Jenna Henderson (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland will host Central Square at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm; while Homer hosts Marcellus at Homer high school on Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles fell to a 2-14 record after losing to Otselic Valley with a score of 5-13 Friday evening.

McGraw is now scheduled to play their last game of the season on the road against DeRuyter this upcoming Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a tough game against Stockbridge Valley with a score of 0-12.  With this loss, Cincinnatus has fallen to an overall record of 10-5.

Cincinnatus’ next game will be at home against Marathon this upcoming Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Norwich

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost 8-9 against Norwich Friday afternoon, making them fall to an overall record of 7-10.

“We again allowed a team back in with fielding errors,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “We wasted the good effort in the circle with silly mistakes in the field. Our hitting tonight was off as well. We hit under a lot of balls that made for easy outs for Norwich.”

Marathon is now scheduled to play on the road against Cincinnatus on Monday (May 15th) at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 5-9 after losing to Skaneateles with a score of 7-18 Friday night.

Homer’s next game was scheduled to take place today (May 13th) at Homer high school at 11am. The Cortland Voice will write up a recap of that game on Monday (May 15th).
