Cortland County Legislators recently voted on the recommendation to advance measures that would repair the wade pool at Dwyer Memorial Park and create new pool attendant positions.

The County Legislature as a whole will vote on the measure at 6 p.m. May 25.

If the first measure is approved, the County plans to use up to $60,000 to repair the wade pool. The allocation of funds would come from the $100,000 the county had previously approved for the construction of a dock at Dwyer Park.

Highway Superintendent Charles Sudbrink said last week the highway department only spent $40,000 on the dock. The latest addition to Dwyer Memorial Park has been in use for a bit under a month now, with the popular Friends of Dwyer Park Facebook page sharing several stories about how “the new pier is being enjoyed by fishermen who now have a place to tie up their boats.”

“The thrill and peace of getting out over a body of water can now be enjoyed by anyone even if they own a boat or a cottage,” reads one of the posts on Facebook from May 7.

Legislator Linda Jones (R-LD-9) told The Cortland Voice Tuesday there is a leak that needs to be addressed.

“We have a leak that is under the wade pool that is leaking a couple inches a day maybe,” she said. “We don’t by any means expect to spend (the $60,000) on the wade pool, but we have no idea what finding where the leak, taking care of the leak, and putting it all back together will cost.”

The second resolution could create new positions for pool attendants at Dwyer Memorial Park.

“The real problem is staffing. I suggested last month that we opened staffing to part-time applicants,” she said. “We have a good chance of solving the problem. There are teachers saying they can work a day out of the week as an attendant.”

The proposed three positions would work less than 20 hours per week at a rate of $15.20 an hour for up to 90 days out of the year.
