Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 17th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Syracuse

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers celebrated senior night with a 17-2 win over Syracuse Wednesday evening. 

Cortland seniors Kaitlyn Egolf, Aliza McCormick, Kaedyn Murphy, Molly Steve, Mallory Turner, and Andrea West were celebrated at yesterday’s game. 

Throughout the game, Cortland was led by Brenna Hogan (4 runs, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 10 strikeouts thrown), Sophie Mayer (4 runs), Andrea West (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Mallory Turner (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Claire Turner (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Lauren Mott (2 runs & 1 hit), Madison Thompson (2 runs & 1 RBI), Danica Peck (1 run), Jadyn Willey (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), and Molly Steve (1 hit). 

Syracuse was led by Selena Shenandoah (1 run & 1 hit), Kylie Monaghan (2 hits & 1 strikeout thrown), Aleysha Cancel Reyes (1 hit & 1 RBI), Emily Rosenthal (1 hit), Taylor Sampson (1 hit), Carli Norris (1 run), and Kaliya Delgado (2 strikeouts thrown).

With this win, Cortland ended the regular season with a 10-9 overall record. 

The Lady Purple Tigers will wait to see who they will be playing in their first sectional tournament game. According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday, May 21st, 2023. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won their last regular season game with a score of 6-5 against Brookfield Wednesday afternoon. 

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Kaylee Brenchley (1 run, 1 hit, 3 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Payton Gerrard (2 runs, 1 hit & 6 strikeouts thrown), Madison Stover (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Gabriella Taylor (1 hit), and Maddison Streichert (1 RBI).

Brookfield was led by Kaysie White (1 run, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Stephanie Brean (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Delaney Karn (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Mackenzie Bugbee (2 hits & 1 RBI), Sydney Bonafield (1 run),  Lydia Peckham (1 run), Mallory Wilcox (1 hit), and Cucci (12 strikeouts thrown). 

With this win, Cincinnatus improved to an overall record of 10-8, and will wait to see who they will be playing in the first round of the sectional tournament. According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday, May 21st, 2023. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Trojans played LaFayette on the road Wednesday afternoon. Homer won the match with a team score of 4-1. 

Here are the results from each match: 

  • 1st Singles: Homer’s Nik Kruman defeated LaFayette’s Andrew Kostiv after two sets - (6-1 & 6-2)
  • 2nd Singles: Homer’s Drew Cotterill beat LaFayette’s Adison McConnell in two sets (6-0 & 6-0)
  • 3rd Singles: Homer’s Matthew Fagerheim won against LaFayette’s Chelsea Benjamin in two sets (6-2 & 6-1)
  • 1st Doubles: Homer’s Fred Thalheimer & Caleb Hanson defeated LaFayette’s Jones Charlie & Emily McClary after three sets (2-6, 6-2 & 7-5)
  • 2nd Doubles: Homer lost to LaFayette’s Ian Colburn & Thomas Somerlot via forfeit 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (IAC Championships Day #1)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the first day of the IAC Championship meet Wednesday evening at Dryden high school against multiple schools. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland placed 2nd in the high jump event (Result - 5’8”)

Marathon Girls

  • Addison Oram placed 6th in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:06.42)
  • Catherine Newkirk finished 4th in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.72)
  • Abigail Trabucco came in 6th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)

The Olympians will be competing in the second day of the IAC Championships today (May 18th) at Dryden high school at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Schools (OHSL Patriot League Championships)

The Cincinnatus Lions competed in the OHSL Patriot League Championships meet Wednesday afternoon at Jordan-Elbridge high school against multiple schools. 

The Cincinnatus’ boys team ended up placing 9th overall out of 15 teams; while the Cincinnatus girls’ team placed 6th overall out of 13 teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Trevor Shevalier came in 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 19’5”). He also placed 3rd in the triple jump (Result - 37’1”) and got 4th place in the high jump (Result - 5’6”)
  • Connor Johnson finished 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:44.03)
  • Alan Cook came in 5th place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 6:33.76)

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Madelyn Pittsley finished in 3rd place in the long jump (Result - 14’8.5”). She also placed 4th in the triple jump (Result - 29’11.5”), and got 5th place in the 200 meter run (Time - 29.02)
  • Justice Crane won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 93’9”). She also got 3rd place in the high jump (Result - 4’10”), and came in 6th in the shot put (Result - 25’11”)
