Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (December 2nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Girls Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament)

The Homer girls wrestling team participated in the Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament at North Syracuse Jr High School over the weekend. 

Individual Highlights: 

  • 185: Lilly Sorenson (Homer) won 1st place after beating Elizabeth Rushman (Canandaigua) in the championship finals - Fall (0:35)
  • 152: Molly Sorenson (Homer) won 1st place in after defeating Delaney Dixon (Windsor) in the championship final - Fall (0:50)
  • 138: Alisa Gonzalez (Homer) won 1st place after beating McKenzie Aldridge (Camden) - Fall (3:50)
  • 120: Mya Locke (Homer) won 1st place after defeating Liliana Chiarizia (Cicero North Syracuse) - Fall (0:55)

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament)

The Homer Trojans participated in the Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament at North Syracuse Jr High School on Saturday. 

Individual Highlights: 

  • 138: Hunter Lines (Homer) placed 3rd after beating Luis Rivera (Fayetteville-Manlius) in the 3rd place match - Fall (3:34)
  • 215: Maddox Johnson (Homer) came in 4th place after losing to Gabe Soundararaj (Windsor) - Tie Breaker (3-2)
  • 215: Owen Burhans (Homer) placed 6th after losing to Micah Collins (Fulton) in the 5th place match - Fall (1:10)
  • 285: Jack Brown came in 2nd place after losing to Jackson Schwab (Fayetteville-Manlius) in the championship final - Fall (1:44)

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Dave Darrow Duals)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Dave Darrow Duals at Cortland junior-senior high school on Saturday (December 2nd).

According to Cortland head coach Clint Morse, There were two Most Outstanding Wrestler awards given after the tournament. The awards were given to Jordan Elbridge’s Jack Lamson (5-0) and Cortland’s Avery Canzano (5-0) with 5 pins in their weight classes

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (60th Annual Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians participated in the 60th Annual Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament at Oxford Academy on Saturday. 

Individual Highlights: 

  • 152: Braydon Homer (Marathon) placed 5th after defeating Joshua Harris (Carthage) in the 5th place match - Decision (9-2)
  • 160: Brittan Keller (Marathon) came in 3rd place after winning in the 3rd place match against Talon Ritter (Vestal) - Decision (8-4)
  • 170: Julian Spizzirri (Marathon) got 4th place after losing to Zeb Stevens (Carthage) in the 3rd place match - Decision (7-5)

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Susquehanna Valley (Jessica M. Beal Memorial Tournament)

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 43-67 in the consolation round of the annual Jessica M. Beal Memorial Tournament at Homer high school against Susquehanna Valley on Saturday.

With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 1-2. 

Homer was led by Lauren Franco (15 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist & 2 steals) and Kaylee Darling (12 points, 10 rebounds & 1 block). 

Note: Susquehanna Valley’s stats were not made available. 

Homer will look to bounce back as they host Skaneateles at Homer high school on Thursday (December 7th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions fell to an overall record of 1-2 after losing to Madison with a score of 16-39. 

Cincinnatus was led by Cortney Scutt (8 points), Lydia Schutt (3 points), Mandi Waltz (2 points), Sidney Glover (2 points), and Rachael Standish (1 point). 

Madison was led by Camryn Parmon (18 points) and Mackenzie Cotter (11 points). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against Belleville Henderson today (December 4th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Thousand Islands

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles lost 6-10 against Thousand Islands on Saturday with a score of 6-10. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Gabe O’Connor (3 goals), Cameron Medeiros (1 assist), Brady Coffin (2 assists), Bodey McGrath (1 goal), Preston Bowman (2 goals), Liam O’Connor (4 assists), Jack Medeiros (15 saves), Cole Mead (9 saves), and Isaac Schmoe (7 saves). 

Note: Thousand Islands’ stats were not made available.

With this loss, Cortland-Homer has fallen to an overall record of 0-3. 

Cortland-Homer is now scheduled to host Skaneateles at the JM McDonald’s Sports Complex in Cortland NY on Thursday (December 7th) at 7pm.
