Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (December 28th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Marathon (Tom Neugebauer Holiday Tournament)

The Homer Trojans defeated the Marathon Olympians in the first round of the Tom Neugebauer Holiday Tournament at Cortland junior-senior high school Thursday evening. Homer won the game with a score of 56-42.

With this result, Homer improved to an overall record of 3-3. On the other hand, Marathon fell to an overall record of 3-5

Homer was led by Max Franco (20 points), Wyatt Wilbur (13 points), Kaden Durham (12 points), and Mitchell Earle (11 points). 

Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (13 points), Zachary Birdsall (9 points), and Bryce Hartman (8 points).

Homer will now take on county rival and tournament host Cortland in the championship round of the tournament at 6:45pm tonight (December 29th); while Marathon plays Groton in the consolation game at 5pm tonight (December 29th). All games will be played at Cortland junior-senior high school.

The Cortland Purple Tigers won 56-34 in the first round of the Tom Neugebauer Holiday Tournament at Cortland junior-senior high school Thursday night. This was Cortland’s first win of the regular season, bringing their overall record up to 1-6. 

Cortland was led by Antonio Terrazas (13 points, 5 rebounds & 2 steals), Jaxson Gambitta (9 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block & 1 steal), Caden Albright (6 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists & 4 steals), Ethan Johnson (6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist & 1 steal), and Owen Michales (6 points).

Groton was led by Michael Lane (8 points), Dominic Mackey (7 points), and Sean O'Brien (6 points). 

Cortland is scheduled to take on county rival Homer in the championship round of the tournament at 6:45pm tonight (December 29th); while Groton plays Marathon in the consolation game at 5pm tonight (December 29th). All games will be played at Cortland junior-senior high school. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Morrisville-Eaton (Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament)

The Cincinnatus Lions lost 49-54 against Morrisville-Eaton in the first round of the Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament on Thursday. With this loss, Cincinnatus fell to an overall record of 3-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (17 points), John Schuyler (16 points), and Jack Stafford (9 points). 

Morrisville-Eaton was led by Evan Stewart (17 points), Dylan Prentice (15 points), Jesse Soden (11 points). 

Cincinnatus will be playing in the consolation game of the tournament at 5:30pm tonight (December 29th) against Otselic Valley. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Onondaga Central (Onondaga Central Holiday Tournament)

The McGraw Eagles lost in the championship round of the Onondaga Central Holiday Tournament Thursday evening against Onondaga Central, with a score of 57-59. 

McGraw was led by Dylan Truman (20 points) and Caleb Epp (17 points). 

Onondaga Central was led by Howard Wright (16 points), Lucas McIntosh (10 points), and Jesse Recor (9 points). 

With this result, McGraw fell to an overall record of 6-2. 

McGraw’s next game will be played against Otselic Valley at McGraw high school on Friday (January 5th) at 7pm.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs.Tully (Marathon Holiday Hustle Tournament)

The Marathon Lady Olympians defended their Holiday Hustle Tournament title Thursday evening, as they defeated Tully with a score of 53-34 in the championship round of the tournament.

“We hustled and worked for everything,” said Marathon head coach Beth Anne Duncan. “We crashed the boards and it was hard for Tully to get anything started. Tully shot well from the field on the chances they did get. Offensively, we worked the ball and played team basketball. It was a fun game to be a part of. I’m proud of this team for digging in and working to accomplish this goal.” 

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (20 points), Audrey Ensign (10 points), and Addison Oram (9 points). 

Tully was led by Samantha Morgan (11 points) and Grace McKenna (10 points). 

The now 7-2 Lady Olympians will host Spencer Van Etten at Marathon high school on Friday (January 5th) at 7:15pm.

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Windsor with a score of 54-15 in the first round of the Cortland Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

With this win, Cortland improved to an overall record of 7-0.

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (13 points & 13 rebounds), Katherine Harris (10 points & 2 steals), Claire Turner (8 points & 13 rebounds), and Lily Yang (7 points, 4 steals & 2 assists). 

Windsor was led by Claire Beattie (5 points) and Grace Deyo (4 points). 

Cortland is scheduled to host the championship game of the tournament against Moravia at Cortland junior-senior high school today (December 29th) at 12:45pm. 

 

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus (Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament)

The McGraw Lady Eagles won 29-24 against county rival Cincinnatus in the first round of the Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament. 

With this result, McGraw improved to a 4-3 record, while Cincinnatus fell to a 2-7 record. 

McGraw was led by Hannah Wilson (17 points), Lexi McCall (6 points), and Madison Sweeney (6 points). 

Cincinnatus was led by Cortney Scutt (14 points), Rachael Standish (7 points), Sidney Glover (2 points), and Londynn Widrick (1 point).

Up next, McGraw will play in the championship round of the tournament against Fabius-Pompey at 3:30pm; while Cincinnatus plays in the consolation game against Otselic Valley at 2pm. All games will be played at Fabius-Pompey high school.

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles fell to an overall record of 1-8 after losing to Fayetteville Manlius with a score of 3-7 in the first round of the Holiday Tournament at the JM McDonald's Sports Complex. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Gabe O’Connor (1 goal & 1 assist), Liam O’Connor (1 goal), Brendan Andrews (1 goal), and Jack Medeiros (29 saves). 

Fayetteville-Manlius was led by Will Sanzone (2 goals), Drew Mayne (1 goal & 1 assist), Walker Thomson (3 assists), Noah Chen (1 goal & 1 assist), Henry Dougherty (1 goal & 1 assist), Colton Walkup (1 goal), Greyson Mucha (1 goal), Nico Capriotti (1 assist), Connor McDonald (1 assist), Teddy Smart (1 assist), Joey Leveroni (1 assist), Gavin Patnode (1 assist), Aiden Ashworth (1 assist), Chris Finger (11 saves), and Sean Lamarche (7 saves). 

Cortland-Homer is now scheduled to play in the consolation game of the tournament against Albany Christian Brothers Academy at 2pm today (December 29th). The game will be played at the JM McDonald's Sports Complex.
