Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 15th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Girls Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Girls Ranking Invitational)

The Homer girls’ wrestling team competed in the Section III girls ranking invitational Monday evening in Fulton. 

Here are some highlights and results from the Homer girls’ wrestling team:

  • 165 lbs: Lilly Sorenson won 1st place after winning the championship round against Abigail Hebble (Camden) - Fall (0:38). Lilly Sorenson won all 4 of her matches. 
  • 165 lbs: Eila Spanbauer ended the tournament with 2 wins and 3 losses 
  • 145 lbs: Molly Sorenson finished in 2nd place. She lost in the championship round against Selina Moore (Sherburne-Earlville) - Fall (0:43). Molly Sorenson ended the tournament with 3 wins & 1 loss. 
  • 138 lbs: Alisa Gonzalez came in 2nd place after making it to the championship round and losing to America Figueras (Phoenix) - Fall (1:14). Gonzalez ended the tournament with 3 wins & 1 loss. 
  • 132 lbs: Gracie Newman won 1st place after beating Rose Mullin (Phoenix) in the championship round - Fall (4:40). Newman won all 4 of her matches.
  • 120 lbs: Mya Locke finished the tournament with 2 wins and 2 losses
  • 107 lbs: Katilyn Porter placed 6th overall after losing in the fifth place match against Rose Douglas (Fulton) - Fall (2:10). Porter ended up getting 1 win & 3 losses in the tournament. 

Varsity Girls Wrestling: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Section IV Girls Wrestling Tournament)

The Marathon girls’ wrestling team competed at the Section IV Girls Wrestling Tournament Monday evening at Whitney Point high school. 

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Oneonta. However, due to bad weather conditions from this past weekend, it was moved to Whitney Point.

Here are some highlights from the Marathon girls’ wrestling team (Note: official results are yet to be made available):

  • 114 lbs: Melodie Sutton won 1st place at her weight class after winning all 3 of her matches. 
  • 107 lbs: Paeton Morehouse ended the tournament with 2 losses at the 107 lbs weight class.

Varsity Boys Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Westmoreland

The Cincinnatus Lions fell to an overall record of 0-5 after losing in three straight sets to Westmoreland. 

Cincinnatus was led by Hunter Downes (3 kills, 1 assist, 6 blocks & 4 digs), Ace Gates (1 ace, 1 kill, 4 assists, & 2 digs), Draven Reynolds (1 kill, 3 assists & 2 blocks), David Peterson (2 digs), Alan Cook (1 ace & 2 digs), Michael Stairs (2 blocks), and Dominic Crandall (1 kill)

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to host Sauquoit Valley at Cincinnatus high school tonight (January 16th) at 5:30pm.
