Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 27th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Sectional Championship)

The Marathon Olympians competed at their Sectional Championship meet over the weekend at SUNY Cortland. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall came in 4th place in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 10:43.77)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco placed 4th in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”). She also finished in 6th place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:52.71)

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. New Hartford

The Cortland girls basketball team came back from a 19-point deficit to beat New Hartford at Cortland junior-senior high school over the weekend. With this win, Cortland improved to an overall record of 13-1. 

“Proud of our effort across the board,” stated Cortland head coach Janice Meyer. “We never gave up against a solid team. These games get us better!”

“Lily Yang locked it down on defense,” added coach Meyer. “We shared the basketball beautifully. We stayed locked in to the plan in the second half. And in the end, we got the job done.”

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (11 points), Aubree Larkin (10 points), Claire Turner (7 points), Lily Yang (6 points), Kendall Mack (4 points), Katherine Harris (3 points), Kartyr Hubbard (2 points), and Zee-Anna Sweat-Rice (2 points).

New Hartford was led by Danielle Lucas (12 points), Kacey Richards (11 points), Tara Fobre (8 points), Ava Brazier (4 points), Charlotte MacTurk (3 points), Kamryn Richards (2 points), and Kate Noonan (1 point).

Cortland’s next game will be played at Cortland junior-senior high school this Tuesday (January 30th) against Chittenango. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:45pm.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Tully

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 4-11 after losing to Tully with a score of 37-27. 

Homer was led by Kennadie Taylor (8 points), Lauren Franco (4 points), Anya Gofkowski (4 points), Kaylee Darling (3 points), Isabelle Small (3 points), Brayden Partigianoni (3 points), and Elizabeth McCloy (2 points). 

Tully was led by Gabrielle Flat (8 points), Grace McKenna (8 points), Rachel Daddona (7 points), Anna Pierce (6 points), Samantha Morgan (5 points), and Ella Polak (3 points).

Up next, Homer will host Westhill at Homer high school on Tuesday (January 30th) at 6:45pm.
