A strengthening area of low pressure will pass to our north across eastern Canada today. This is a classic set up for some active weather and big changes across our area.

Clouds and occasional rain showers will be common through the morning and first half of the afternoon. Most of the time it will probably not be raining, but some of the showers could have a brief downpour or even some rumbles of thunder.

South winds will increase steadily this morning and into the afternoon, reaching speeds over 15 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph, especially over higher terrain.

Temperatures will work their way into the upper 50s and low 60s.

Roughly between 3-5 PM, the cold front associated with the low will plow through the region. Along the front will be a band of heavy rain, gusty winds, and possibly some additional thunder.

Immediately as this band moves through, winds will turn to the northwest and temperatures will begin to plummet. Within 20 minutes, temperatures will have fallen into the low 40s. Within an hour, it will only be in the 30s.

Rain lingering behind the primary band will begin to turn over to snow, and there may be a coating of accumulation by nightfall. Roads may become slick as temperatures drop below freezing.

Tonight, on and off snow showers will be possible. Northwest winds will continue to gust to 45 mph at times but will begin to decrease before midnight.

Overnight, only a few remaining stray flurries are expected with northwest winds gusting to 35 mph. Low temperatures will make it all the way down into the upper 10s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Thursday: Breezy and much colder. Maybe a few flurries in the morning. Some afternoon sun. Morning lows in the upper 10s. Afternoon highs in the mid and upper 20s.

Friday: Mostly sunny and turning warmer. Morning lows in the low 20s. Afternoon highs in the upper 40s.

Saturday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows in the low 30s. Afternoon highs near 50.

Sunday: Clouds and some sun. Morning lows in the mid 30s. Afternoon highs in the mid 50s.
