Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Lansing & Elmira

The Marathon Lady Olympians hosted a three-way match against Lansing and Elmira on Tuesday. 

Marathon came in second overall with a total of 204 points. Lansing placed 1st with 202 points, and Elmira placed 3rd with 288 points. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins). 

Marathon sophomore Savanna Warfield, individually scored the lowest points of the night with 46 points.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians played against Union Springs at Wells College on Tuesday. 

Marathon lost the match with a team score of 209-159. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland boys’ lacrosse team fell to an overall record of 0-9, after losing to Chittenango Tuesday night with a score of 11-5. 

Cortland was led by Bodey McGrath (1 goal & 2 assists), Mark Darling (1 assist), Luke Kesler (1 goal), Joe Banewicz (3 goals), and Declan Vail (16 saves). 

Chittenango was led by Brendon Barnard (5 goals & 2 assists), Henry Miller (2 goals & 1 assist), Cole Dawkins (2 goals), Norman Coomer (1 goal & 1 assist), Peter Shulz (1 goal), Macksen Cliff (1 assist), Aeron Kliphon (1 assist), and Connor Bradbury (16 saves). 

This was Cortland’s last scheduled game of the season, as the rest of the season was canceled. 

According to Cortland Athletic Director Matthew Wood, the rest of the Cortland boys’ lacrosse season was canceled due to a lack of available players.

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 18-11 against Cazenovia Tuesday evening, making them fall to an overall record of 1-8. 

Cortland was led by Aubree Larkin (4 goals & 1 assist), Valerosa Gambitta (5 goals), Francesca Smith (1 assist), Emma Marks (1 goal), Sophia Souzas (1 goal), and Elizabeth Slavick (8 saves).

Cazenovia was led by Charlie Prior (9 goals & 1 assist), Madison DeAngelis (4 goals & 4 assists), Hayden Bubble (3 goals), Tara Pratt (1 goal & 1 assist), Wynslet Skidmore (1 goal), Izzy Stromer-Galley (1 assist), and Eliza Smith (8 saves). 

Cortland is now scheduled to host Johnson City at Cortland junior-senior high school on Thursday (May 2nd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Mexico on the road with a score 7-2 Tuesday evening in order to improve to a 4-4 record. 

Cortland was led by Brenna Hogan (2 runs, 1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Abigail Romans (2 runs & 1 hit), Madalyn Thompson (2 runs & 1 hit), Lauren Mott (1 run & 1 hit), Claire Turner (1 RBI), and Gracie-Jo Homza (1 hit). 

Mexico was led by Hailey Comstock (1 run, 1 hit & 10 strikeouts thrown), Angelina Nguyen-Truong (1 run & 1 hit), and Giuliana Jones (1 RBI).

Cortland’s next game is scheduled to be played against Mexico at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex in Cortlandville this Thursday (May 2nd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer softball team has fallen to an overall record of 0-10 after losing to Westhill with a score of 18-2.

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (1 run), Emily Petrella (1 run & 2 strikeouts thrown), Alexandria Kellaway (3 hits & 2 RBI’s), and Payton Coon (1 hit). 

Westhill was led by Alexa Korrie (2 runs, 1 hit & 4 RBI’s), Morgan Kohanski (2 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Sydney Medeiros (3 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Isabella Johnson (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Samantha Snyder (2 runs, 2 hit, 1 RBI & 7 strikeouts thrown), Cadence Ramsing (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jocelyn Caputo (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Catherine Cottrell (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Ava Antoine (1 run & 1 RBI), and Sophia Johnson (1 run). 

According to Homer’s athletic website, Homer will now host Westhill at Homer junior high school on Thursday (May 2nd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Onondaga-LaFayette

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 19-4 against Onondaga-LaFayette on Tuesday. With this win, Cincinnatus improved to a 7-2 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Gerrard (3 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Neveah Billings (3 runs, 4 hits & 2 RBI’s), Hannah Ellerson (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Rachael Standish (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Madison Stover (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Lucy Finch (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Kaylee Brenchley (1 run, 4 hits & 3 RBI’s), Lydia Schutt (1 run), and Sailor Stith (1 hit).

Cincinnatus pitchers Neveah Billings and Kayle Brenchley combined for a total of 7 strikeouts thrown. Billings threw 4 strikeouts and Brenchley threw 3 strikeouts. 

Note: Onondaga-LaFayette’s stats were not made available. 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Cazenovia on the road today (May 1st) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland baseball team improved their overall record to 10-3 after beating Mexico 7-2 Tuesday evening. 

Cortland was led by Owen Johnson (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 3 strikeouts thrown), Antonio Terrazas (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Albright (1 run, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Zach Muir (1 run, 2 hits & 7 strikeouts thrown), Cal Albright (1 run & 1 hit), Ethan Johnson (1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 hit), Connor Browngardt (1 run), and Jaheim Robinson (1 run). 

Mexico was led by Carter Robert (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Brayden Mack (3 hits, 2 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Jacob Poissant (1 run), Evan Hansen (1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), and Joe Shendock (1 hit). 

Cortland is now scheduled to host Mexico at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this Thursday (May 2nd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Sandy Creek

The McGraw Eagles lost with a score of 10-7 against Sandy Creek on the road Tuesday afternoon. With this loss, McGraw now holds a 7-2 record. 

McGraw was led by Calob Sutton (2 runs, 3 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Blair Mulcahy (1 hit & 1 RBI), Owen Mulcahy (1 run), Liam Baker (2 runs), Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Riley VanLiew (1 run & 1 RBI), and Thomas Lea (1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown).

Sandy Creek was led by Aden Bartlett (1 run & 1 hit), Alex Caufield (2 runs & 1 hit), Jaeden Darling (3 hits), Mason Ennist (2 runs), Colton Killam (1 run & 1 hit), Logan Lando (1 run & 1 hit), Maddox Palmer (1 run & 3 hits), Connor Rogers (1 run & 1 hit), and Caylon Zehr (1 run, 1 hit & 3 strikeouts thrown). 

McGraw’s next game will be played this upcoming Saturday (May 4th) at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex against General Brown. The game will begin at 10am. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Trojans played against Skaneateles on the road Tuesday evening. 

Homer lost the match with a team score of 3-0. 

According to Homer head coach Stephen Trobert, Homer’s “2nd singles (Drew Cotterill) and 3rd singles (Cooper Layaw) played great matches and were both a game away from wins before the match unfortunately had to be called due to weather.”

Here are the results from the three official games recorded:

  • 1st Singles: Clark, Brayden (Homer) lost to Soderberg, Noah (Skaneateles) - (0-6) & (0-6)
  • 1st Doubles: Totman, Max & Hanson, Caleb (Homer) lost to Salzhauer, Jake & Salzhauer, Peter (Skaneateles) - (0-6) & (0-6)
  • 2nd Doubles: Spada, Enzo & Barbieri, Nicolas (Homer) lost to Torrisi, Kevin & Lovier, James (Skaneateles) - (0-6) & (1-6)
