Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 13th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (OHSL Liberty Large School Championships 2024)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the “OHSL Liberty Large School Championships” at Chittenango high school Monday afternoon. 

The Cortland boys’ team placed 3rd out of 7 placing teams, while the Cortland girls’ team placed 5th out of 7 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from Cortland’s boys and girls teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Iniko Abani won 1st place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 16.02) and in the high jump (Result - 6’1”). He also placed 5th in the 200 meter dash (Time - 23.96)
  • Feodor Kalytyuk came in 2nd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 54.47)
  • Spenser Dodds finished in 3rd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 54.49)
  • Ryan Burns placed 4th in the high jump event (Result - 5’2”)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 44’6.50”) and in the discus throw (Result - 135’5”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 4th place in the discus throw (Result - 124’5”). He also placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 39’0.50”)
  • Jack Phelan placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 39’5.50”)

Cortland Girls

  • Isabella Sisting finished in 3rd place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 28.23)
  • Rileigh Madden came in 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”). She also placed 5th in the long jump event (Result - 15’2.75”)
  • Alivia Reif placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 26’10.25”)
  • Campbell Bush placed 5th in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.40)
  • Kartyr Hubbard came in 3rd place in the triple jump (Result - 31’7.50”). She also finished in 6th place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.58)
  • Bailey Dintino finished in 6th place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.55)
  • Kendall Mullally came in 6th place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:06.23)
  • Brianna Bergene placed 6th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:49.68)
  • Serene Gray came in 6rh place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 28.80)
  • Peyton Burns placed 6th in the high jump event (Result - 4’4”)
  • Morgann Doane came in 6th place in the long jump (Result - 14’9”)
  • Maude Terwilliger placed 6th in the triple jump (Result - 30’8”)

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (OHSL Liberty Large School Championships 2024)

The Homer Trojans competed in the “OHSL Liberty Large School Championships” on Monday.

The Homer boys’ team placed 7th out of 7 placing teams, while the Homer girls’ team placed 3rd out of 7 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from Homer’s boys and girls teams:

Homer Boys

  • Donavin Brown finished in 3rd place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (Time - 11:46.00). He also came in 4th place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 18.83) and in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:55.37)
  • Tasker Dennis placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 41’3”) and in the discus throw (Result - 124’11”)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:13.23). She also came in 2nd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:03.70) and in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:35.88)
  • Amelia Wagner came in 4th place in the 2,000 meter steeplechase (Time - 9:16.90)
  • Lauren Franco placed 4th in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:16.93)
  • Alyssa Swayze came in 4th place in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 12:37.40)
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 30’6”). She also placed 6th in the discus throw (Result - 79’2”)
  • Molly McMasters came in 2nd place in the discus throw (Result - 94’2”). She also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 29’5.50”)
  • Brynn Loomis won 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 96’9”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Teams (OHSL Patriot League American Championships 2024)

The Cincinnatus Lions competed in the “OHSL Patriot League American Championships” at Tully high school on Monday. 

The Cincinnatus boys’ team placed 8th out of 8 placing teams, while the Cincinnatus girls’ team placed 5th out of 8 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from Cincinnatus boys and girls teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Michael Stairs placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 25’2.50”)
  • David Peterson came in 5th place in the discus throw (Result - 56’9”)
  • Haydn Kisner finished in 6th place in the discus throw (Result - 51’0”)
  • Trevor Shevalier placed 4th in the high jump event (Result - 5’0”). He also came in 5th place in the long jump (Result - 16’5.50”) and 6th place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:10.26)
  • Eric Peterson came in 3rd place in the shot put event (Result - 36’3.50”)
  • Hunter Downes placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result - 34’1”)

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Sidney Glover won 1st place in the shot put (Result - 28’9”). She also came in 2nd place in the discus throw (Result - 80’4”)
  • Londynn Widrick placed 2nd in the discus throw (Result - 51’1”)
  • Lora Schroeder tied for 3rd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’4”)
  • Peyton Tefft tied for 3rd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’4”)
  • Madelyn Pittsley placed 3rd in the long jump (Result - 15’0.25”)

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Lady Trojans lost to Phoenix with a score of 37-17, making them fall to an overall record of 1-13. 

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (4 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Khloie Young (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Alexandria Kellaway (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Kaylee Darling (2 runs & 1 hit), Samantha Sovocool (2 runs), Alexis Arnold (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), McKenzie Head (2 runs), Payton Coon (1 run), and Alisa Gonzalez (2 runs & 2 RBI’s).

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Christian Brothers Academy today (May 14th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw softball team improved to an overall record of 8-6 after beating Stockbridge Valley with a score of 5-1. 

McGraw was led by Remington Stull (2 runs & 11 strikeouts thrown), Josslyn Eaton (1 run & 1 hit), Lexi McCall (2 runs), Camdyn Caperton (2 hits & 1 RBI), and Katelynn Millard (1 RBI). 

Stockbridge Valley was led by Paige Webb (1 run), Marlie Brummer (1 RBI), Rebekah Cullen (1 hit), and Karalynne Carmon  (10 strikeouts thrown). 

McGraw is now scheduled to play on the road against Brookfield today (May 14th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. McGraw

The McGraw Eagles defeated Marathon with a score of 12-1 Monday evening. With this result, McGraw improved to a 9-4 record, while Marathon fell to 3-14. 

This was Marathon’s last game of the season.

“We did not play a very good game defensively,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “We made too many mistakes and gave them extra outs. Credit McGraw because they capitalized on our mistakes. I thought both starting pitchers threw well. Zachary Birdsall and Jaydon Bassett. Both only gave up 1 earned run. Offensively we just couldn’t get things going. We are a young team and we have a lot of things to work on this offseason.”

Blake Birdsall (1 hit & 3 strikeouts thrown), Zachary Birdsall (3 strikeouts thrown), Elijah Ticknor (1 run), Barrett Trabucco (1 hit), and Colton Oram (1 hit).

McGraw was led by Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 1 hit & 12 strikeouts thrown), Blair Mulcahy (1 run & 1 hit), Foster Eaton (1 hit & 1 RBI), Owen Lea (2 hits & 1 RBI), Calob Sutton (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Owen Mulchay (2 runs & 1 hit), Easton Livermore (1 run & 1 hit), Emory Sears (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brennan Wilson (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Riley VanLiew (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Thomas Lea (1 run, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 2 strikeouts thrown), and Mason Allen (1 hit & 2 RBI’s). 

Up next, McGraw will play against Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus at Otselic Valley high school on Wednesday (May 15th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Madison with a score of 233-286 on Monday. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).
