Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 15th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Syracuse City

The Homer Lady Trojans won 15-14 against Syracuse City on Wednesday, improving their overall record to 11-5. 

This was Homer’s last game of the regular season. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (4 goals, 1 assist & 3 ground balls), Emma Effinger (3 runs, 4 assists & 4 ground balls), Ella Spanbauer (3 goals, 2 assists & 1 ground ball), Isabelle Small (2 goals, 1 assist & 1 ground ball), Caitlin McCloy (2 goals & 1 ground ball), Maria Partis (1 assist & 1 ground ball), Gracie Newman (1 goal), Izzy Tutino (1 ground ball), Mikayla Smith (1 ground ball), and Aislynn Cobb (10 saves & 3 ground balls). 

Syracuse’s goals were scored by Alayna Wood (7 goals), Cecilia Witherel (3 goals), Brigid Burns (3 goals), and Mia Leo (1 goal).

Homer will now wait to see who they will be facing in the upcoming sectional tournament. 

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting this upcoming Sunday (May 19th). 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Purple Tigers ended the regular season with a 14-5 record after beating Chittenango with a score of 7-2. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 hit & 1 RBI & 7 strikeouts thrown), Owen Johnson (2 runs & 3 hits), Caden Albright (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Cal Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 run & 1 hit), Zach Muir (1 run & 1 hit), Jaheim Robinson (1 RBI), and Robbie Atkins (1 run). 

Chittenango was led by AJ Valente (1 run & 2 hits), Zailor Caras (1 hit & 1 RBI), Andrew Kielbasa (1 hit), Quinton Hilliker (1 run & 1 hit), Drew Thomas (1 RBI), Evan Tianello (2 strikeouts thrown), and Reagan Poland (2 strikeouts thrown).

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting for the upcoming sectional tournament this Sunday (May 19th).

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an overall record of 7-9 after losing against Chittenango with a score of 21-3 Wednesday evening. 

Cortland was led by Abigail Romans (1 run & 1 hit), Brenna Hogan (1 run), Sophie Mayer (1 run), Lauren Mott (1 RBI), Claire Turner (1 RBI), Jadyn Willey (1 hit), Danica Peck (1 hit), and Ava Turner (1 strikeout thrown). 

Chittenango was led by Alivia Cavotta (3 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Anna Cavotta (2 total runs, 1 home-run, 2 hits & 5 RBI’s), Hannah Eddy (1 run & 1 hit), Stephanie Huckabee (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Brianna Tooke (3 runs & 1 hit), Aubrey Eddy (1 hit), MaKenna Palko (3 runs & 1 hit), Hannah Cretaro (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Julia Spencer (3 runs & 2 RBI’s), Carmella Furco (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Lauren Machan (2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 5 strikeouts thrown).

This was Cortland’s last game of the regular season.

There will be a seeding meeting for the upcoming Section III playoff tournament this Sunday (May 19th). 

Varsity Boys Golf: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Stockbridge Valley with a team score of 254-308 Wednesday afternoon. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).
