Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 17th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (IAC Championship Tournament)

The Marathon girls golf team competed in the first round of the IAC Championship tournament at Hillendale Country Club on Friday. 

Savanna Warfield placed 3rd overall with a score of 92 in the tournament. 

Gabbi Smith placed 9th (Result - 99), Kendre Euson placed 11th (Result - 101), Abby Ensign placed 13th (Result - 102), Audrey Ensign placed 21st (Result - 116), and Elizabeth VanCise placed 29th (Result- 127).

Marathon is now scheduled to play in the sectional championships this upcoming Thursday (May 23rd) at 9am. The sectional championships will take place at Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Horseheads. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Homer

The Homer Trojans defeated the Cortland Purple Tigers with a team score of 3-2 Friday evening at Cortland junior-senior high school on Friday. 

With this result, Homer improved to a 6-5 record, while Cortland fell to 2-9. 

Here are the results from Friday’s matches:

  • 1st Singles: Tyler Cranfield (Cortland) defeated Brayden Clark (Homer) - (6-0) & (6-1)
  • 2nd Singles: Wrangler VanSlyke (Cortland) lost to Drew Cotterill (Homer) - (6-1) & (6-3)
  • 3rd Singles: Jeremie Hale (Cortland) defeated Lucas Barbieri (Homer) - (6-3) & (6-3)
  • 1st Doubles: Sai Patel & Andre Myers (Cortland) lost to Max Totman & Caleb Hanson (Homer) - (6-4) & (6(7)-6(4))
  • 2nd Doubles: Homer won by forfeit

This was both Homer’s and Cortland’s last scheduled match of the season.

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. LaFargeville

The Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus baseball team defeated LaFargeville with a score of 17-3. 

With this result, Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus ended the regular season with an overall record of 5-8. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus was led by Lukas Schieferstein (4 runs, 2 RBI’s & 7 strikeouts thrown), Cole Warren (3 runs, 2 hits & 5 RBI’s), Caleb Loomis (3 runs & 2 hits), Hunter Rozewski (4 runs & 1 RBI), Troy Miller (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Oliver Marshall (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Deven Maxson (1 hit), and Dustin Perry (1 run).

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting for the upcoming sectional tournament on Sunday (May 19th).
