Cortland County High School Sports Recaps; Sectional Playoffs (May 20th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Immaculate Heart Central-Watertown (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.6 seeded Homer Lady Trojans defeated No.11-seed Immaculate Heart Central-Watertown in the opening round of the Section III Class D tournament Monday evening with a score of 19-2. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (3 goals, 3 assists & 4 ground balls), Maria Partis (5 goals & 2 assists), Isabelle Small (3 goals & 4 ground balls), Gracie Newman (3 goals & 1 ground ball), Eila Spanbauer (2 goals & 2 ground balls), Izzy Tutino (1 goal & 2 ground balls), Emma Effinger (2 goals), Taryn Quinn (1 ground ball), Aislynn Cobb (5 saves), and Elizabeth McCloy (2 saves). 

Immaculate Heart Central-Watertown’s goals were scored by Abigail Bombard (1 goal) and Emma Moore (1 goal)

This was Homer’s last home game of the season. 

Homer is now scheduled to play in the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament against No.3-seed Westhill at Westhill high school tonight (May 21st) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Section IV Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Section IV tournament at the SUNY Delhi golf course on Monday. 

A total of 72 individual golfers competed in the tournament. 

Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins. 

Here are the individual results from each of Marathon’s golfers:

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Division II Singles Tournament)

Top-seeded Tyler Cranfield of Cortland competed in the first three rounds of the Section III Division II Singles Tournament at the Utica Parkway Tennis Courts on Monday.

Cranfield won the first round against Isiahis Beauchamp of Carthage in two sets, (6-0) & (6-0). 

Cranfield then beat Cooper Reed of Central Valley Academy in the quarterfinal after two sets, (6-0) & (6-0). 

Finally, Cranfield  played in the semifinal match, where he defeated Anthony Fico of Jamesville-Dewitt, (6-0) & (6-2). 

Cranfield is now scheduled to play in the championship match against No.3-seed Evan Lyga of New Hartford today (May 21st). According to Section III, the match will be played at Oneida high school at 3:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Division III Singles & Doubles Tournaments)

Homer’s doubles team of Caleb Hanson and Drew Cotterill came in as the No.7-seed in the Section III Division III doubles tournament Monday afternoon. 

Hanson and Cotterill won the first round of the tournament against Ethan Bryant and Dieondre Wells of Lowville with a score of (6-1) & (6-2). 

However, they then lost in the quarterfinal round of the tournament against Evan Molloy and Max Reger of Cazenovia with a score of (6-0) & (6-1). 

Homer’s Brayden Clark came in as the No.13-seed in the Section III Division III singles tournament, and lost in his play-in match against No.20-seeded Cooper Graham of Phoenix with a score of (7-10).

All matches were played at the Utica Parkway Tennis Courts. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class B-1 Meet)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Section III Class B1 championships at Westhill high school Monday evening. 

The Homer boys’ team placed 11th out of 13 placing teams, while the Homer girls’ team placed 6th out of 13 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis placed 2nd in the discus throw event (Result - 136’6”).  He also came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - 41’11.5”)
  • Oliver Kida finished in 3rd place in the 400 meter high hurdles (Time - 62.79). He also came in 4th place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 17.23). His 400 meter high hurdles time was a personal best.
  • Damian Brown placed 4th in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase (Time - 11:14.74)
  • Homer’s 4x400 meter relay team (Oliver Kida, Tristyn Henkel, Kyler Crump, and Nick Costa) came in 6th place with an official time of 3:47.31

Homer Girls

  • Molly McMasters won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 95’9”). She also came in 2nd place in the shot put (Result - 32’3.5”). Both of her throws were personal bests. 
  • Ingrid Aagaard came in 2nd place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:00.36) and in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:24.10). Both of her performances were personal bests. Her 800 meter time also qualifies her for the Section III State Qualifier
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 31’0”). She also came in 5th place in the discus throw (Result - 86’0”)
  • Brynn Loomis placed 3rd in the discus throw (Result - 89’8”)
  • Homer’s 4x800 meter relay team (Lauren Franco, Mia Knight, Amelia Wagner, and Alyssa Swayze) finished in 5th place with an official time of 11:17.88

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. Frankfort-Schuyler (Preliminary Round of Sectionals)

The Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus’ baseball team season came to an end after losing to Frankfort-Schuyler in the preliminary round of the Section III Class C tournament on Monday. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus lost the game with a score of 4-1. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus came into the game as the No.22-seed, while Frankfort-Schuyler came in as the No.11-seed. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus was led by Lukas Schieferstein (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Avram Moses (1 hit), Caleb Loomis (1 hit), Troy Miller (1 RBI), and Braeden Davis (1 strikeout thrown). 

Frankfort-Schuyler was led by Angelo DeSarro (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brian Martinez (1 run), Chase Evans (1 run), Brayden Wisheart (1 hit), Martino Rocco (1 hit), Thomas Service (1 hit), and Thomas Service (10 strikeouts thrown).
