Cortland’s softball season comes to an end with first round sectional loss vs. Oneida (photos included)

Varsity Softball: Cortland’s season comes to an end after losing in the first round of sectionals against Oneida. (Photo provided by Kevin L. Smith of The Cortland Voice).

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost in the first round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament against Oneida with a score of 4-3 Tuesday evening at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex. 

Cortland came into the tournament as the No.8-seed, while Oneida held the No.9-seed. 

Cortland got off to a good start after scoring three runs at the bottom of the first inning to make it 3-1. However, Oneida slowly got back into the game, and they (Oneida) defeated Cortland after scoring a run at the top of the extra eighth inning.

Cortland ended up being led by Brenna Hogan (1 hit & 18 strikeouts thrown), Sophie Mayer (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Madelyn Kim (1 run & 1 hit), Nellie Lucas (2 hits), Jadyn Willey (1 hit), and Ceirsten Carrethers (1 run). 

Oneida was led by Vanessa Babcock (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brianna Molter (1 run & 1 RBI), Alexis DeGroat (1 run), Taydem Marsh (1 run), Julianna Caroli (1 RBI & 6 strikeouts thrown), and Beth Laming (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland ended their season with an overall record of 7-10.
