Varsity Baseball: Cortland & McGraw advance in sectional play (photos included)

Both the Cortland Purple Tigers and the McGraw Eagles won their first round matchups in their respective sectional tournaments Tuesday evening. 

Here are the results as well as photos from each of their games on Tuesday: 

Cortland vs. Carthage (Section III Class A)

No.5-seed Cortland defeated No.12-seed Carthage with a score of 10-3 in the opening round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 run, 3 hits, 5 RBI’s & 2 strikeouts thrown), Caden Albright (3 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Owen Johnson (2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Cal Albright (2 runs, 2 hits & 4 strikeouts thrown), Robbie Atkins (2 runs & 1 hit), Danny Jackson (1 hit & 1 RBI), Tyler Fitchette (1 run), Antonio Terrazas (1 hit), and Jaheim Robinson (1 run).

Carthage was led by Bryce Fordemwalt (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Jaired Bach (1 run & 2 hits), Eli Vore (1 run & 1 hit), Ethan Moser (1 hit), Ian Mono (1 run & 1 strikeout thrown), Greg Rogers (1 RBI), and Thomas Storms  (1 strikeout thrown). 

Up next, Cortland will take on No.4-seed Westhill in the quarterfinal round of sectionals at Westhill high school on Thursday (May 23rd) at 5pm.

McGraw vs. Copenhagen (Section III Class D)

The No.5-seeded McGraw Eagles won 12-8 against No.12-seed Copenhagen in the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (2 runs, 4 hits, 4 RBI’s & 7 strikeouts thrown), Owen Lea (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Foster Eaton (1 run & 1 hit), Calob Sutton (2 runs & 1 hit), Owen Mulchay (2 runs), Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Brennan Wilson (1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Thomas Lea (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Riley VanLiew (1 hit & 1 RBI).

Note: Copenhagen’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

McGraw is now scheduled to play in the sectionals’ quarterfinal round against No.4-seed Poland this upcoming Thursday (May 23rd). The game will be played at Poland Central School at 4:30pm.
