Honan breaks 53-year old Cortland school record; Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 22nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class A Championships)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the “Section III Class A Championships” Wednesday evening at East Syracuse Minoa high school. 

According to Cortland coach Luke Schweider, “the meet was only half finished due to weather and will be completed Friday morning.”

Because of the setback, all official results from the meet will be provided when the meet is completed on Friday (May 24th). 

However, during the meet, Cortland senior Bryan Honan broke a Cortland school record in the discus throw event that was set in 1971.

“The previous school record was held by Rhys Adams and was 150-10,” stated coach Schweider. “Bryan (Honan) set the new one at 151-3.”

Honan ended up winning 1st place in the discus throw event. His throw also qualified him for the NYS Championship. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Section IV Class D Championships)

The Marathon Olympians hosted the “Section IV Class D Championships” at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School Wednesday afternoon. 

The Marathon boys’ team placed 11th out of 20 placing teams, and the Marathon girls’ team placed 9th out of 22 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall came in 2nd place in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 10:48.54). He also placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:50.96) and tied for 4th place in the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”)

Marathon Girls

  • Catherine Newkirk finished in 3rd place in the triple jump event (Result - 32’8.75”). She also came in 4th place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.71)
  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”)
  • Addison Oram came in 4th place in the high jump event (Result - 4’6”)

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (IAC Championships)

The Marathon Olympians played in the IAC championship tournament at Soaring Eagles Wednesday afternoon. 

According to Marathon head coach Sydney Jennison, Marathon had a “6th place finish” with a team score of 400.

The No.3-seeded Homer Trojans defeated No.6-seed Indian River in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class C playoff tournament with a score of 7-6. The game was played at Homer high school. 

Homer was led by Cooper Swartz (4 goals & 5 ground balls), Daniel Stiles (1 goal & 7 ground balls), Gabriel O'Connor (2 goals & 1 ground ball), Jack Brady (2 ground balls), Alexander Votra (1 assist & 13 ground balls), Wyatt Wilbur (1 assist & 1 ground ball), Brycen Poole (1 ground ball), Kaden Durham (1 ground ball), Mason McCall (1 ground ball), Liam O'Connor (1 ground ball), Christopher Slade (1 ground ball), Dominic Burlingame (1 ground ball), and Benjamin Bradshaw (3 ground balls & 11 saves). 

Indian River’s goals were scored by Riley Alexander (3 goals), Zachary McMahon (2 goals), and Connor McMahon (1 goal). 

Up next, Homer will play in the sectional semifinals against No.2-seed South Jefferson at Fayetteville-Manlius high school this upcoming Saturday (May 25th) at 11am.
