Cortland County High School Sports Recaps; Sectional Playoffs (May 23rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield (Sectional Quarterfinals)



The top-seeded Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 3-2 against No.9-seed Brookfield in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament on Thursday. 

This was Cincinnatus’ last home game of the season. 

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (2 runs & 1 hit), Payton Gerrard (1 run, 2 hits & 3 strikeouts thrown), Kayle Brenchley (1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), and Madison Stover (1 RBI). 

Brookfield was led by Kaysie White (1 run & 1 hit), Delaney Karn (1 hit), Emma Stetson (1 hit), Mallory Wilcox (1 hit), and Kylee Cucci (1 hit, 1 RBI & 7 strikeouts thrown).

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play against No.5-seed Oriskany in the sectional semifinals. The game will be played at Carrier Park in East Syracuse this Saturday (May 25th) at 1:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Oriskany (Sectional Quarterfinals)



The No.4-seeded McGraw Lady Eagles lost in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D playoffs against No.5-seed Oriskany on Thursday with a score of 12-4. 

McGraw was led by Katelynn Millard (1 run & 1 hit), Josslyn Eaton (1 run & 1 hit), Remington Stull (1 run & 2 strikeouts thrown), Leah Terwilliger (1 run), Camdyn Caperton (1 hit), and Abby Lakie (1 strikeout thrown). 

Oriskany was led by Kaelyn Buehler (3 runs, 4 hits & 4 RBI’s), Brook Matys (2 runs & 1 hit), Camryn LoRusso (1 run & 1 hit), Kyla Zabek (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Koley VanVechten (2 runs), Ashley Zyskowski (1 run), Audrina Gulisano (1 run), Peyton Buehler (1 run), and Megan Wright (1 hit & 6 strikeouts thrown). 

McGraw ended their season with an overall record of 10-7. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Westhill (Sectional Quarterfinals)



The No.5-seeded Cortland baseball ended their playoff run after losing 4-0 against No.4-seed Westhill in the Section III Class A quarterfinals.  

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 hit), Danny Jackson (1 hit), Antonio Terrazas (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Jaheim Robinson (1 hit), Robbie Atkins (1 hit), and Zach Muir (4 strikeouts thrown).

Westhill was led by Michael Madigan III (1 run & 1 hit), Kellen Pens (1 hit & 1 RBI), Ryan Campbell (2 hits), Peter Stroman (2 hits), Taden Chester (1 hit), Trey Dillabough (1 hit), Dominic Zawadzki (1 run), TJ Pichoske (1 run), Eric Holstein (1 run), and Ryan Campbell (7 strikeouts thrown). 

Cortland’s season ended with a 15-6 record. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Poland (Sectional Quarterfinals)



The No.5-seeded McGraw Eagles lost against No.4-seed Poland in the Section III Class D quarterfinals with a score of 5-1. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (1 run, 2 hits & 1 strikeout thrown), Riley VanLiew (1 hit), and Jaydon Bassett (9 strikeouts thrown). 

Poland was led by Carter Cookinham (1 run, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 7 strikeouts thrown), Luke Malin (1 run & 1 hit), Kaiden Stemmer (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Landon Rommel (1 run & 1 hit), Grady Dutcher (1 hit & 1 RBI), Tommy Haver (1 run), Colton Roark (1 run), and Michael Anderson (1 hit).

McGraw ended its season with a 12-5 record. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Section IV Tournament)

The Marathon Lady Olympians competed in the Section IV tournament at the Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Horseheads. 

Marathon ended up placing 6th overall with 433 points.
