Honan Heads to States; Varsity Track & Field New York State Qualifiers (Cortland, Homer & Marathon Results)

Cortland, Homer, and Marathon competed in their respective state qualifying meets on Thursday (May 30th). 

According to Cortland boys’ head coach Luke Schweider, Cortland senior Bryan Honan automatically qualified to compete in the state tournament after recording a school record throw of 151'3” in the discus event at the sectional championships last week. Honan threw a 144’2” on Thursday’s state qualifier to place 4th overall.

The New York State championships will be held at Cicero North Syracuse high school on Friday (June 7th) and Saturday (June 8th). According to NYSPHSAA, Gates will open at 10am on Friday and 9am on Saturday.

Here are the results from each Cortland County team that competed in the state qualifiers:

Cortland Purple Tigers

The Cortland Track & Field team competed in the Section III State Qualifiers at Cicero North Syracuse. 

Boys

  • Jack Phelan came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 42’11”)
  • Iniko Abani finished in 3rd place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 15.89). He also came in 3rd place in the high jump event (Result - 5’10”)
  • Bryan Honan came in 3rd place in the shot put event (Result - 49’11.75”). He also placed 4th in the discus throw (Result - 144’2”)
  • Cortland’s 4x400 meter relay team (Feodor Kalytyuk, Eugene Aharkov, Spenser Dodds & Jack Phelan) finished in 6th place with an official time of 3:39.54

Girls

  • Cortland’s 4x100 meter relay team (Isabella Sisting, Morgann Doane, Rileigh Madden & Bailey Dintino) came in 10th place with an official time of 53.01

Homer Trojans 

The Homer Track & Field team competed in the Section III State Qualifiers at Cicero North Syracuse. 

Boys

  • Tasker Dennis came in 7th place in the discus throw event (Result - 132’10”)
  • Brynn Loomis placed 9th in the discus throw (Result - 88’4”)

Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard finished in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:23.63)
  • Molly McMasters came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - 32’ 5.75”). She also placed 8th in the discus throw (Result - 90’0”)

“All of the Homer athletes did us proud,” said Homer head coach George Schneider. “Just qualifying to compete in the meet was a huge accomplishment. Molly will continue to throw at SUNY Cortland next year. Tasker will be joining the workforce after graduation. Ingrid and Brynn are only sophomores and have bright futures with the Track and Field ahead of them.”

Marathon Olympians 

The Marathon Track & Field team competed in the Section IV State Qualifiers at Union-Endicott high school on both Wednesday (May 29th) and Thursday (May 30th). 

Boys

  • Andrew Edsall came in 18th place in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 10:26.14). He also placed 21st in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:46.77)

Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 5th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”). She also placed 22nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:43.92)
  • Addison Oram tied for 7th place in the high jump (Result - 4’8”). She also finished in 8th place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:04.00)
  • Catherine Newkirk placed 8th in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.02) and in the triple jump (Result - 31’8”)
