The City of Cortland Police Department recently issued a warning of an increase in scams involving phone calls.

According to a Facebook post by city police, people are using scam calls in an attempt to collect a debt, fine or receive bail payments. The post noted that scammers often pose as authority figures from agencies such as the IRS, social security or law enforcement.

Noted in the post, “They request that victims submit payments by going to the store, purchasing gift cards, and then supplying the gift card codes/pins to the scammer to pay the fine/debt. Do not fall victim to these scams.

“The elderly are often the targets and victims of these scams.”

Any questions, or if contacted by a scammer, contact local law enforcement.
