City of Cortland firefighters made quick work of a bedroom fire on Wednesday, according to a report.

Before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, city firefighters responded to a structure fire at 2 Banks St., a single-family home in Cortland’s northwest corner.

The report stated that the fire, which came from a second-floor front bedroom of the residence, was contained and extinguished within minutes when firefighters used a pressurized water extinguisher.

Noted in the report, “Cortland fire department’s A-Shift was on duty today, and had just completed a previous alarm on the other side of town when this call came in. They were on the way before the call was finished dispatching, and were on scene within a few minutes. As city firefighters arrived at the scene, the sole occupant of the house told them that the bed in her room was on fire. Deputy Chief Derek Reynolds immediately donned his turnout gear and grabbed the water can from his duty Tahoe.”

No injuries were reported to any of the resident occupants or the firefighters on scene. After the fire was put out, crews continued to look for signs of fire extension throughout the rest of the house and began ventilating the smoke from the structure.

Noted in the report, “The city fire department would like to commend the quick response and effective teamwork of all personnel in today's incident. The coordinated efforts of all involved exemplifies their skill and expertise in managing such situations with minimal disruption and damage.

“It is also worth noting that, by closing the door to the involved room, the resident herself helped prevent further fire spread by depriving it of oxygen. Residents are reminded to always prioritize fire safety in their homes, including ensuring smoke detectors are in working order and having a fire escape plan in place.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, the report stated.
