A Cortland County Legislature committee will discuss the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Cortland.

The county’s buildings and grounds committee, which was called by committee chair Paul Heider, will hold a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (June 27). The committee meeting is before the monthly legislative session at 6 p.m.

According to county legislature clerk Savannah Hempstead, the committee will consider the following resolution:

“Resolution authorizing the Memorandum of Understanding and to terminate the Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Cortland for city court space in the Cortland County Courthouse.”

The agenda for Thursday’s buildings and grounds committee meeting can be seen here.

City mayor Scott Steve said at the June 18 common council meeting that the MOU between the city and the county to move city court into the county courthouse was canceled.

Steve mentioned that the state court system is implementing an appeals court in the county courthouse, which is put together for former city judge Elizabeth Burns (now a state-level judge) and will keep her in the area. The state, Steve said, is also looking to add another family courtroom in the courthouse.

“That pushes the court space beyond max (capacity),” Steve said.

The resolution in regard to the MOU is up for a vote during Thursday’s county legislative session. The agenda for the county legislative session can be viewed here.
