CORTLAND, N.Y. - Smoke filled a four-unit apartment building on the north end of Cortland Monday afternoon.

At 2:45 p.m., The Cortland Fire Department was dispatched to 26 Grant Street after one of the occupants of the four-unit building called 911 to report smoke in the main hallway.

Responded firefighters located a fire in the basement, near the hot water heater, according to Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Friedman. It was extinguished in under 10 minutes using two fire hoses.

All of the occupants made it out safely, and a tanker was stationed at the Homer Fire Department while Cortland firefighters remained on scene.

Residents of the building have been relocated for the evening, an official said.

The Cortland Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, with assistance from the Cortland Police Department and state fire investigators.
