DRYDEN, N.Y. – A Dryden man was charged with attempted burglary after being taken into custody by police following a foot chase in Dryden Monday evening.

According to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home at 6:38 p.m. on Etna Road after a male homeowner said a man was rummaging through his vehicle. The man then tried to enter the home, but returned items taken from the vehicle when the homeowner confronted him.
Deputies received a tip that the suspect, who'd fled the scene before they arrived, was at a home on Bone Plain Road. A man matching the description of the suspect was outside the home and subsequently ran into nearby woods. Police said the man was chased down after a quick pursuit and taken into custody.
Karel R. Westerling, 33, of Dryden, is charged with felony second-degree attempted burglary, felony fourth-degree grand larceny, misdemeanor resisting arrest and misdemeanor obstructing governmental administration.
He was arraigned at the Village of Freeville Court, remanded to the Tompkins County Jail with no bail and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
