Cortland Firefighter for a Day camp returns for third year

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Kids in Cortland County will have the chance to experience a day in the life of a firefighter this summer.

The 3rd annual Firefighter for a Day Camp will be held at Suggett Park on Wednesday, July 27, and Thursday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Cortland Youth Bureau and Cortland Fire Department created the camp in 2014. Camp participants are taught the importance of fire safety, rescue techniques and what to do in an emergency.

The camp is for children between 3 and 14 years old. The first day will include children 3-8 years old; the second day will include 9-14 year-olds. Registration is full and about 250 kids are expected to attend.

The camp consists of six stations, including a hazmat station, a 911 dispatch station, a TLC Ambulance demo, fire engine rides, ladder truck tours and a hose and hydrant demonstration.

In 2015, a Mercy Flight medical helicopter landed in Suggett Park as part of a demonstration, This year, the camp will feature a vehicle extrication demonstration.
