Cortland man accused of stealing items from parked cars at auto shop

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland man was charged with petit larceny Tuesday after he allegedly stole tools from parked vehicles at an auto shop in Cortlandville, the Cortland County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

At around 6:15 p.m. Monday, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff's Office responded to Hartley's Auto and RV Center in Cortlandville for a report of a person who had been caught stealing tools from vehicles parked at the auto shop.

Employees observed a person rummaging through vehicles and stealing items before leaving the area on foot, the sheriff's office said.

Eric Hale, 22, of Cortland, was located a short distance away, authorities said.

He was charged with two counts of petit larceny, a misdemeanor, and taken to Cortland County Jail on $750 cash bail.
