Gusty winds to usher in wave of cold weather for Cortland area

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Cortland area has been blessed with unusually warm, springlike weather for the past week. That comes to an end tonight.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a wind advisory for central New York that will take effect at 7 p.m. Wednesday and last through 1 p.m. Thursday.

A gusty cold front will pass through the region this evening, with strong gusts continuing overnight through midday Thursday, forecasters said.

Wind speeds will average between 15 and 30 mph but could reach as high as 40 to 50 mph. Tree limbs could be blown down and power outages are possible.

Gusty winds may be accompanied by severe weather and heavy rain, forecasters said. People living in the advisory area should secure all loose objects.

Temperatures will drop to the mid-teens tonight and are expected to remain below freezing through Sunday morning.
