SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum delivered opening remarks to faculty and staff Thursday morning, ushering in the 2017-2018 academic year at the college.
New students at SUNY Cortland are scheduled to begin arriving at their dormitories and residence halls at 1 p.m. today. Current and transfer students will begin moving on campus between 1-4 p.m. on Saturday. Traffic is expected to be impacted.
Officers from the Cortland Police Department and Cortland Fire Department say they plan to visit various off-campus housing sites to provide students with information about living off-campus, tenant rights and responsibilities, being a good neighbor, and avoiding the attention of police.
"The intent of the detail is to open the dialogue between students and the [police and fire] departments," the Cortland Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The detail will run through Sep. 9.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, new students will attend a speech titled "What's Your Green Dot?" by Alberto Lorenzo, a senior trainer at Violence Prevention Nonprofit at Georgetown.
Academic convocation will be held Sunday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m. All first-year and new transfer students, SUNY Cortland faculty, librarians and professional staff, are invited to participate in this event.
A dinner, by academic department, will immediately following the ceremony, giving students a chance to connect with faculty in their field of study.
Fall classes begin on Monday, Aug. 28.
