Cortland men's hockey defeats Morrisville behind strong performance from freshmen

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Four freshmen each scored his first career goal as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated Morrisville St., 5-2, in SUNYAC action Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Mustangs fell to 1-3-2 and 1-3.

Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) led Cortland with one goal and two assists. Conor Tierney (Point Pleasant, NJ/Philadelphia Flyers), Louis DiMatteo (Nobleton, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) and Scott Donahue (Commack/Boston Bandits) each netted a goal. Senior Paul Fregeau (Los Angeles, GA/Des Moines Buccaneers) also netted a goal and added an assist.

Freshman Tom Ritchie (Spencerport/New York PAL Islanders) collected two assists, while seniors Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and sophomores Connor Beck (Richmond Hill, ON/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and Martin Lavallee (Goose Bay, NL/Nepean Raiders) collected one assist apiece for the Red Dragons. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 28 saves.

Juniors C.J. Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, UT/Hawkesbury) and Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, IL/Mattawa Blackhawks) scored goals for Morrisville. Junior Bradley Hefner (Billings, MT/Dells Ducks) and seniors Layne Martin (Findlay, OH/Dells Ducks and John Lauer (Camillus/Syracuse Stampede) each recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Jared Young (Pueblo West, CO/Dells Ducks) made 32 saves.
