CORTLAND, N.Y. — It's not every day that a high school freshman earns a starting spot on the varsity basketball team. Jack Gutchess, a freshman at Bishop Grimes, falls into that coveted category.
Even more impressive? Gutchess is from Cortland, but he decided to attend the private school to play on a more competitive level.
In his first season for the Cobras, the 6'4", 180-pound Gutchess averaged 4.5 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound per game.
"There's some stuff I need to improve on, but it was a good season overall," Gutchess said.
Bishop Grimes fell to the Utica Notre Dame boys basketball team, 81-65, in the Section III Class A sectional title game at the Carrier Dome on Sunday.
