CORTLAND, N.Y. — A drug investigation by the Cortland County Sheriff's Office led deputies to a marijuana growing operation on a property in the town of Virgil, authorities announced Monday.

The arrest came after investigators received information that 42-year-old Kevin J. Piotti had been growing marijuana inside a barn located on his property on West State Road in Virgil.

The sheriff's office obtained a search warrant to gain access to Piotti's barn, where they found 65 marijuana plants.

Piotti was charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the second degree, a class D felony. He was also charged with two misdemeanors for growing cannabis and endangering the welfare of a child; the latter charge came after investigators learned that a child less than 17 years old had access to the barn.

He was arraigned in Cortlandville Town Court and released.

His next court date is May 15 in Virgil.
