Cultural Council of Cortland County announces First Friday

What: First Friday
Where: Cortland, NY
When: September 7, 5 - 8 p.m.

CORTLAND, N.Y. — September’s First Friday takes place on the 7th from 5-8pm and will feature diverse art and fun activities for the whole family. This event is organized by the Culture Council of Cortland County in concert with arts venues as described below.

Head over to the 1890 House Museum where you will discover that someone got loose in the museum and created havoc by filling the rooms with items that don't belong. Put on your sleuthing hat and see if you can figure out what's wrong at the 1890 House! You will find fascinating items to photograph there to enter into “Foto Frenzy.”

Don’t miss the Fiber Art exhibit at Cinch Art Space. From felted scarves, to baby quilts and crocheted ponchos, the local fiber talent is abundant. In addition, there are works of over 60 local artists and craftspeople to purchase.

Be sure to make it to the CNY Living History Center at 4386 US 11, Cortland, NY. The CNY Living History Center presents its first art exhibit that will host works by the Cortland Art League. The exhibit will remain on display through the month of September during regular museum hours, Tues – Sat, 10am-5pm. On First Friday you can meet the artists, and enjoy good food and conversation along with their artwork.

On to the Cortland Free Library where Steve Marstall’s art work will be on exhibit. Many know Steve as a Mac Guru. But in addition, he is an incredibly talented artist. If you have never seen his work, you are in for a treat.  Meet Steve and enjoy his art work on First Friday from 5-8pm.

"YW Programs in Action," the current Cortland YWCA exhibit, will include David Beale’s beautiful water color paintings of children in the Bridges for Kids program and their mentors, photographs by the GEMS (Girls: Empowered, Motivated, & Successful)  group, and artwork of the YW preschoolers.

"Mazes and Labyrinths" is an exhibition at “SikoraArts” of abstract paintings created by Robert Sikora. Meet Robert, view his painting and enjoy refreshments and live music. "SikoraArts" is located at 1010 McLean Road, at the corner of Pleasantview Drive and McLean Road, in Cortlandville. The art space will be open for First Friday September 7th from 5-8pm. Other hours can be arranged by calling 607-597-9227. Park on the street or on the grass and follow signs pointing to the entrance of SikoraArts.

As you travel from venue to venue, take some pictures to enter into “Foto Frenzy,” a cell phone photography contest. You can submit up to two photos for $10 to enter the competition. There will be a registration table at BRU 64 in downtown Cortland on First Friday for easy sign-up. Images will be professionally printed, mounted and displayed at the Cortland Free Library Regional Photo Exhibit in October jointly sponsors by the Library and the Cultural Council. Winners of the contest will also be posted on the Cultural Council website.

Pick up a map at BRU 64 or other First Friday venue noted above to use for navigating to the venues participating in First Friday. For more information, please visit: https://www.culturalcouncilofcortlandcounty.org/first-friday-foto-frenzy
